Subject: Quad/4x4/5spd/3.55 or3.92 IP: Logged
Message: Hello Folks,
I know there is many discussions on the gear ratio thing but I am wondering if the 5 spd with the 3.55 is as fast as the auto with the 3.92. There isnt that much ratio difference I think. But I know that a 5 spd is usually faster than auto. If you guys have any experience or opinions, please let me know. I am gonna probably buy the new truck in about a month or so. I am looking for get up and go but also decent mileage. thanks for any responses.

Message: Get the 3.92's. It'll pull stonger, be a little faster, won't really hurt your mpg, and once you get used to them...alot of fun.

Message: Get the 3.92 especially w/ the 4x4 because the larger tires only make the final ratio taller anyway. My RPM at 80 mph is about 2550-2600 with the 5 speed, 4.7L, 3.92 and 4x4 SLT package.

Message: thanks for the input. I probably will go with the 3.92. I just heard that it was real jerky but I have driven lots of manuals so I'll get used to it. take it easy and dont burn to much rubber.

Message: Well I know that I am going to get flamed but I like the 3.55:1. I think that in the long run it will effect your gas milliage. If you are always driveing hard with lots of throttle input then you will propably not see much difference but if you drive like most people do then it will make a difference. The 3.92 will be easier to take off with from the line and it will be easier to take off with a heavy load. The higher the number for the gear ratio the easier it is to take off with throtle close to idle; the closer to idle you take off the smoother it should feel in daily driveing. So if you want accelerate a little faster or plan on doing alot of towing then go with the 3.92:1; if you mostly drive drive on hwy and occasional race and tow then get the 3.55:1. Their is no free lunch if you raise the number of rpms you turn at any given speed then you have to consume more fuel.... Good Luck!! What ever you choose I am sure you will be happy!!!!!!!

Message: I'm with sandman. I posed the same question here about 2 months ago. Almost everyone said get the 3.92's. But I went with the 3.55's because:
1. Better gas mileage, especially at highway speeds. This truck alredy gets bad mileage, why make it worse for a few 10ths of a second?
2. I really am not towing anything of significant weight.
