I get a similar problem on my 98 (3.9L auto)
I get what sounds like a second fan revving high on startup, very intermittent, then again on accel from stop to shifting to 2nd. It also shifts from 1-2 about 300 rpm higher. At the same time, in accel from stop, engine revs high and I have 1/4-1/2 power until it shifts to second, then all is fine.
Are these problems related? Dealer has NEVER found the source or anything else to attribute this to.

Reference Bob's question...

Almost any engine now will rev high on initial startup to give the catalytic converters a quick shot of heat to help bring them up to normal operating temperature quicker. This is done to reduce emissions. I agree that it's not great for the engine, but shouldn't be too much of a problem unless the engine has been sitting for several days and all residual oil on moving parts has drained back to the pan. But then again, if this is a fairly recent development, it might be worth looking into.

I have a problem with my car. Everytime i gas my car, the engine rev very high with little acceleration. Somtimes on first gear, my rpm would be up to 5000 rpm and the speed would only be 15mph. No, it is not the way i drive my car. I been driving a manuel car for two years already. Recently this problem came up. My car red line at 6000 rpm. I hope someone could help me with this problem. Thx for looking at my post.

Sam,

If you are accerlerating, it could be your clutch is going bad. Meaning, slipping clutch, it sounds like time for a new one.
