Message: Just a few questions on remote starters...I am looking to get one for x mas.
I have an 01 with remote keyless entry.
Are they hard to instal?
can I make it work with my factory remote?
Best buys has one on sale for 150 installed..Is it worth it to go that route?
Thanks in advance

Message: If you have the 4.7 dont even try it. My friend did it himself and he has a 2001 with no power door locks and blew his keyless entry CPU. It also took him almost two weeks. This kids not stupid either. He has a friend that works at dodge in FL and the tech there was having problems installing them. BUT the truck does start with the remote starter just no door locks. Save yourself some frustration and have it installed. You will only save a couple of bucks and have to worry about shorting something out.
Thats my 2.5 cents

Message: I have a remote starter on my 2001 QC 4X4 4.7L. It is made by Driven Technologies in Chicago. I have had 2 trucks before this one and had the same remote starter installed in all 3. Mine is actually a combo with an alarm built on. I think I paid around 500 installed. DO not get the cheapo from Best buy and DEFINATELY DO NOT have best buy install it!!! If you are in Illinois I can give you the name of an EXCELLENT alarm shop in Alsip, Illinois. They do excellent work and come highly recommended from many people. Also, if you go with the cheapo you probably won't get good antenna range. I have no trouble starting my truck no matter where it is. Take your time and look at ALL options before making your selection. Good luck!!

Message: I put in a Disinetec(sp?) and had no problems. I was able to start the truck by remote in about 2 hours. Now,about the keyless,my remote starter came with that also, and after 14 hrs,I gave up and had Auto Illusions install the correct relays for about $40.00. One remote does it all!! I can even program it to start the truck if the temp falls below 30 deg. and stop after 10 min. I have never done this however.

Message: My 2000 Dak has keyless entry with no alarm system. I bought mine from Design Tech International ($75) and used my factory remote for the input signal.
After an hour or so reading the instructions, downloading the color code wiring sheet from their web sight, and two+ hours of installation, I'm done. I'm not an electronics wiz, I don't look forward to worming my head and arms around underneath the steering column to work but I found this project to be fun and wouldn't hesitate to do it again. I would NOT do it again if I had to interface the remote starter with an alarm system. The pros can have all of that one.
If you want more detail let me know

Message: That sentry key makes the install a little more difficult. You need to have an adapter that actually uses a sentry key as part of the circuitry.
Directed Electronics makes a very good line of alarms/remote starters. They make brands like Viper, Python, and Hornet I think.
It's probably best to get an alarm and remote start at the same time. That way you can get a 4 button remote to; lock/unlock, panic alarm, remote start, and an accessory relay to roll down the windows or honk the horn at people casing your truck. (The latter is my favorite, and I use it on a weekly basis)
Try and get one installed at a reputable car audio/alarm shop. The big chains like Circuit City, Best Buy and Sears have guys that are usually inexperienced working the install booths.
Privately owned businesses tend to do better quality work, so that you'll tell your friends. Word of mouth is very important to these small businesses.

Message: Jim S. when you installed your RS, what wire(s) did you hook into for the locks. I have a 00 4.7L with factory keyless, and just installed a Bulldog starter. Everything works great, except for the locks. They are a little off on their wiring diagrams for the 00. According to the FSM, the lock and unlock wires are orange/violet and pink/violet. I tried tapping into these with no luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Message: you buy what you get!I have a remote start with lcd screen that ells me if my truck is runnig if the alarm went off and why it went off, sound, open door......As far as everbody having problems with the door locks you are not the first.I did mine as soon as it was off the lot.I found the best and easiest way to solve the problem is to solder directly onto the computer in passenger dash that controls locks instead of running transistors and fuses.

Message: KCDak
I tapped into a violet/black wire behide the driver's kickpanel. It's contained in a wire bundle that passes from the driver's door, through the rubber boot, and back into the cab.
The emergency brake linkage made quarters pretty tight in there and didn't solder this connection. I used what I know as a T-clip to splice into the lock/unlock circuit.
Hope this helps

Message: A friend of mine manages the service dept. of a large Canadian Tire store. Customer brought in a car for service and when the mechanic was going get the car, it started in gear before he got there and took out 3 vehicles and a light post ..... fortunately, no pedestrians. The customer admitted afterwards he had installed an auto-start system himself. So beware, there can be serious problems if you screw up on installation.
Just got an Ungo 2005 remote start/security system in my '02 Dakota. I had to get an extra grey key made so they could wire it in line to keep the OEM sentry key system operational. Thats the one that makes the vehicle die if someone starts it without the key.
Anyway, great system .... many programmable functions, tremendous range etc.
Cheers ..... Audie from Ontario
