Subject: Electric fan phenom IP: Logged
Message: Here's one for you. I have installed electric fans on three vehicles; a 80 Toyota Celica, 87 Dakota 3.9V6/auto, and now on my 99 Dakota 3.9V6/auto. All three exhibited the same phenomenom. After I get to work (22 miles, highway) and shut off the engine, I get a cloud of steam or vapors rising out from under the front of the hood. I raise the hood, thinking I have a coolant leak, I find nothing. But, the "cloud" is quite obvious. All three vehicles did it, all three had 15psi coolant systems with surge tanks. I live in east central Wisconsin (COLD, damp mornings are normal). In each case the fan has not kicked in, the temp is normal, and the fan is wired to run even after the ignition is off. Any ideas? Clues? Strange? Just me?

Message: are you installing the kinds of fans that require the temp sensor "bulb" to be put into the radiator? I suggest you have a leak at that point and this is normal, (but not a good thing), for this type of installation. My Black Magic fan does not use this type of installation, the temp sensor is wedged into the fins of the radiator. Just my guess...

Message: Thanks Rascal, I didn't consider that fact. But, I only installed that type of sensor (carefully) on my 99 Dak. The other two installations used a thermal switch, in the upper radiator hose on the Celica, and pipe-teed in the heater line at the intake manifold (near the thermostat housing) on the 87 Dak. All three used temp switches set for 195°. On all three I've never seen a leak. Strange huh?

Message: The thing with a elecric fan is that it doesn't run all the time letting water to get on the rad and set there until the thermostat opens heating the rad up. When the rad is heated up the water on it becomes steam causing what seams like to be a leak. The new minivans have a feature that runs the fan just before the thermostat opens nad drys out the rad. It is called anti steaming.

Message: Thanks CW, that's it! I'm almost embarressed that I didn't think of something like that (being an engineer you know). It makes total sense because it wouldn't happen all the time, only when I shut the truck off at the "right" time. I'm surprised the electric fan manufacturers don't list this reaction in the instructions for conversions to electric fans. Thanks again CW.

Message: Nope no book beside me just DC training. You are correct I don't have much of a life but I kinda like it that way. I am usually doing stuff on weekends but like to relax during the week. Belive it or not this is kinda like stress relief.
