I bought a new '02 Dakota R/C, 4.7, 5spd, 4x4, 3.92 Sure Grip rear, towing and HD load packages. Everytime I get on then off the throttle it makes a loud clunking noise, like a bad u-joint. Dealer's mechanic says that's normal for all the 4.7 5spd Daks. Find that very hard to believe but I'm hoping some people on this board can give me their experiences.

The 5 speed clunks pretty good if you are not smooth with them. No torque convertor to take the shock loading.

I'm fairly good with a 5 speed, been driving and racing stick shifts for over 30 years. There is a soft clunk when I let the clutch in or out that I also feel in the clutch pedal. That feels like a race clutch grabbing, so I'm not too worried about that noise. The loud clunking coming from the rear is more like a suspension wind up or u-joint clunk. I'm not banging hard on the throttle, just normal acceleration and deceleration. My truck has less than 1K on it and I've been very easy on the break in, other than the owner's manual suggestion of "some full throttle acceleration to the legal speed limit helps break in the engine properly" merges onto the interstate.

They do have a very soft suspention with to much play in the springs IMO. All I can say is that my truck has no extra sounds exept when I have power or decel going through the trans and I step on the clutch.

Mine does it, too.

Could it be that the differential pinion gear is not properly shimmed for thrust?

Or Could it be transmission slop?

Could it be the clutch disk springs are weak?

My 01 4.7 does the same thing but I have the auto tranny, if I get on it for a few seconds than back off I get a clunk noise sounds like tom said like a u joint, could be the rear too I guess I haven't spoke to the dealer about it yet

Thanks for the input! Since it appears to be common in the 4.7 I plan to go through my drive train this weekend and check for play in the u-joints and possible suspension issues. I'll keep everyone posted on my progress.

I have a 2002 regular cab with 3.9 and five speed. It has a clunk from the rear end also. I think the backlash is excessive, but the dealer says it is within spec. It seems to be more than I have seen on any of my previous vehicles.

It is a normal condition. The clutch in these 4.7s are almost like a race clutch. I work for dodge dealer and have seen the 4.7 clutch's . It is almost the identical clutch they use in the diesels. As your clutch seats with milage it will probably improve.

There appears to be two issues to the "drive train" clunking. First is the clutch clunk. I suspected Dodge would use a heavy duty or race type clutch for the 4.7 engine. Ken confirms that and is right on about it will settle down with a little time. The second issue is a heavy clunk when getting on or off the throttle. I'm beginning to agree with Ron and Dave that it is rear end related. When I first take off in the morning I don't get the noise. After driving for 15 minutes or so I begin to hear the clunk. If it is a suspension issue I should hear it regardless of whether the truck is warmed up or not. Same with a U-joint or drive train geometry issues. Keeps pointing back to the rear end. Will check the backlash and thrust loading this weekend if weather permits and let you know what I find.

So ahhh...is this a problem or a characteristic. Has this clunk led to any problems for anyone or is it just what they do. Are there any high mileage owners that had this noise and later had a diff. explode or a u-joint twist apart. Let us know what you find Tom and for the record I can make my drivetrain clunk too but I can eliminate it by modifying clutch engagement.

I have a 2000 V6 5-Speed with the NV3500 tranny i ask everytime i go to the dealer and was told by several different techs that they all do this. I don't like it feels sloppy at times but i guess it a feature/characteristic of the NV3500 tranny

2001 4.7L 5spd 4x4 3.92LSD. The drivetrain seems to have play. I can turn the driveline by hand a tiny bit; it isn't U joints but play in both the transfer case and rear end. If I picked the rear end off the ground it'd be interesting to see how far I can turn the drive shaft before the rear wheels start turning and then also determine how much is in the transfer case or transmission. Both have to contribute to the clunk when power is lifted abruptly or clutch is pushed in while torque is on the drive train.

17000 miles on the nose, transfer case has started clicking noise between 10-20 mph (like a 3/4 aluminum ratchet or playing cards in your bicycle spokes - take your pick). Dealer is rebuilding transfer case on monday. I have another issue with a 1st to 2nd gear grind on cold mornings (below 35F). Will grind each time I shift 1st to 2nd for first few miles then go away. Going to see if dealer will rebuild or replace transmission since they are half way there and this issue has been documented a number of times.

OK guys. How about this? I have '02 Q.C. 4X4 3.92 w/tow group,5.9,auto,loaded. Same type of clunking when on/off throttle as TomM. Sounds like u-joint or ring/pinion lash. Its rather disturbing to me to have anything like this on a truck with only 7k easy miles on it. Which shouldn't surprise me. Had leaking rear main seal within first month after purchase! Its going back to the Dealer. Again.

Yea know what you mean.

I'm talking about NEW Dakota's. Mine clunks like hell when shifting from P to R and D w/the automatic. Bad brake noise. Squeeking joints. I'm just waiting to get a few more miles in and take it to the dealer. I have other cars to drive so they will have the truck as long as it takes to fix everything.
