I have a 97 Dakota extended Cab and whenever I am either turning into steep drive-ways or off-roading, I hear a very loud pop from underneath the bed of the truck. I have searched this site for recalls, but I dont know if I apply for one or not. Has anyone had this problem? Does anyone know what it is that is wrong, and how I can fix it or go about getting recall work done on it? Thank yall for your help in advance.

Change the rear diff. fluid. Make sure you add the additive from mopar if you have limited slip.

It's the leaf springs popping together. It's normal.

Popping from rear end is not normal. Crawl under there and shake everything to make sure nothing is loose. Do it sitting on the ground and again with jacksstands under the frame just ahead of the rear tires so all is hanging. Block the front wheels when you do this.
Loose shocks come to mind, Sears did that to me when they did a poor job installing them. Possibly loose spring mounts, shackles, bad bushings, etc. Is there a rear sway bar? Look for bad bushings there as well. Also, make sure you tail pipe hangers are intact. One last thing, are you sure it is from the rear? Sometimes it is hard to tell from inside the cab. If not sure, have a good front end man check all the front suspension parts.

I think there was a TSB out for the popping sound. It was either the mounts or the leaf springs. Wasn't a big deal, was just told to bring it in if it became too annoying. It is starting to. :-)
