Subject: Random stalling - whats the prob?

Message:
Hi all, this is my first post here. I recently bought a 87/2wd/AT/3.9 V6 It idles rough and recently since the weather has started to get colder, it will sometimes stall out while idling.

Last time it started up ok, but almost immediatley after putting it into drive I got a little bit down the road and it stalled out. I pulled over and put it in park. It would not start up right away. Even after letting it sit for 30+ mins it would try to turn over but was not getting fuel. I sprayed some starter fluid into the carb and it started up, and I let it idle for several minutes. I drove it around during that day but the next morning it wouldn't start again. Another shot of starter fluid got it going and it hasn't happened since (been a couple days)

Sooooo.... clogged fuel filter? fuel pump? O2 sensor? A friend of my fathers knew someone with a 87 Dakota with a similar problem and thought he remebered it being some type of valve problem? I am still learning about engines and cars/trucks in general so if you dont mind explaining it to me like I'm an idiot, it would help :) Thank you very much

I am pretty sure that one is carbed. May need some choke adjustment. That one is out of my range of knowlage I mainly work on the gen 3 daks.(97 and up) You could try gettin the carb rebuilt. Check your general tune up items plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel pressure, stuff like that.

Yes, it's a Gen1. How much would it cost to have the carb rebuilt? The plug wires look pretty new, but I can't tell for sure. I will probably replace them. I plan on getting a tuneup soon, whcih should replace the plugs as part of it, correct? How would I check the cap, rotor and fuel pressure? I'm trying to learn all this stuff as I go.... thanks for the help

Best advice is to find a service manual and read up on all this stuff. No idea what it would cost to get the carb rebuilt. You may be able to get a rebuilt replacment as well.
