Subject: cat went bye bye, now truck won't start!
IP: Logged

Message:
My dad has a 1990 Dakota. The other day he was driving home and noticed smoke coming from under the truck. he pulled over and saw that the catalytic converter was cherry red. So figuring that the cat had went bad, he just cut it out.

Now after that the truck would run real rough. He replaced the EGR valve, thinking it went bad, but still it ran rough. Next he replaced the O2 sensor, and now it wont't even start!

Any thoughts on what might be wrong (other than cutting out the cat, instead of replacing it)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Aaron

I tried that in an 87 cutlass once for about a day. The car ran so poorly that I immediately went to the muffler shop an had a new one installed, a much better performance. The 02 might be bad, but I don't think they would cause the truck not to start, just run poorly. Try first with a new 02 sensor (again, hopefully you have a return policy) and a cat. Then go from there. It seems as if when you replaced the o2 that it quit, so that is step one for me.

My 2 cents

Somtimes multiple problems are present on a vechile that are not related at all. Cuting out the cat has nothing to do with it not starting! The O2 sensory if defective also would not hinder the vechile from starting. Remember that you must have fuel, air, and spark to make an engine run. Your father should check all his fuses and relays. Then check for voltage at ECM/PCM and ignition system. Check for spark. Then check fuel pressure. IF all else fails read the codes.

I think your truck may be running to richly. That is why the cat overheated and could be the cause of your problems now

To all who replied, sorry I'm just now getting back here.

As stated before, he already replaced the O2 sensor. Could it be a bad one and should he try another?

I kinda felt that the O2 sensor was bad and was causing the computer to think the engine was getting too much oxygen. That's why he replaced it in the first place.

The reason I felt this was the case was because the engine is getting gas, you can see it when you take the air cover off.

Thanks for the replies so far, keep them coming if you have any other thoughts.
