Message: This was written to me and I thought it was interesting
"I own a `94 Dodge Dakota which I purchased in `96 from a dealer.
The truck had just under 39000 miles on it. It is now 2-24-01 and the
truck now has over 366,000 miles. I have replaced the timing chain
once, 2 or 3 water pumps, crankshaft sensor, brake rotors 2 or 3 times
,catalytic converter, 2 or 3 gas pumps, tail pipe, tires, muffler,
oxygen sensors, batteries, and I think that`s it. I`ve kept the oil
changed every 3000 - 4000 miles and adding Prolong oil additive.
The truck is a 5 speed manual transmission and still has the original
clutch. I use the truck in my delvery business which explains the high
mileage. The truck is still running well. I never thought I`d get
this far. Go figure !"

Mark,
I think it is important to point out that the truck mentioned is not your truck, but someone that wrote in. I say this to warn visitors to your site about the dangers of using aftermarket additives. He mentioned PROLONG oil additive.
I have made many posts here (search under Slick 50, zMax, MMO, Marvel Mystery Oil) regarding the HAZARDS of using any additives. There are a few good advantages to additives ... but VERY few.
It's the fact that oil chemistry is a science and many hours and lots of $$$ goes into blending oil. To think that an additive maker can come out with something that works in improving the quality of an oil without disturbing the existing oil's chemistry is definitely not thinking about the long term consequences. Chemistry clash is a good reson not to mix differant oils and/or additives to achieve your own "homebrew".

Prolong is a "snake oil" and the company has been prosecuted by the FTC:
http://www.ftc.gov/opa/1999/09/prolong.htm
Prolong contains highly chlorinated paraffins, which can demonstrate some incredible Extreme Pressure lubricating properties. However, as with any chlorinated parafiin, they will wind up generating acids in your engine that will ultimately attack bearing surfaces (and just about everything else). Prolongs main component is Chlorinated Parrafins at 51.5%. Chlorinated Parrifins are extremely toxic and a known cancer causing agent. And without sufficant TBN boosters, it can turn into a strong acid in the presence of combustion. The chlorinated parrafins will eventually pit and/or soften the metal parts in the engine. Prolong is an additive to use only when an engine is so worn out that engine failure is a real possibility. The Chlorinated Parrifins in Prolong will soften the metals and fill-in any gaps or groves in the cylinder walls or on the piston --- and you might get an additional few thousand miles before you have to pull the engine.

The FTC has fined just about every company that markets these various oil additives --- the makers of Slick 50, STP, Valvoline, Prolong, Duralube, zMax, MMO --- and many others.

I agree with The earlier post by Russ:
"... you have to give some credit to the driver, only an excellent driver would get that kind of use out of a truck. 366000 mi/ original clutch = good driving habits."
Heck, my father is such a cautious driver ... such a "soft foot" ... that he routinely gets 250,000 miles + on every truck he has owned ... and replaced far fewer components that the guy in the email. For the record --- he uses only Amsoil oils, lubricants and filters --- and has for more than 10 years.
