Hey guys,
I have had my 01 CC 4x4 3.9V6 Dakota for about 6 months now and have put around 9000 miles on it. A lot of people seem to be having problems with their brakes. So far I haven't noticed any. When did you guys first notice it, and should I take it to the dealer if I have problems or take it somewhere else that puts other types of pads/rotors on? Thanks.

Have you had your tires rotated yet? The warping is due to improperly torqueing the lugnuts. Long term there is no choice but to look at the aftermarket. (imho)

I just did my own tire rotation. I just tightened the lugs tight like I have on all previous cars. I guess I will go back and take a look at the torque. Thanks.

I have a 01 QC 4x4 as well. I have not had any problems yet either. I have 9333miles on mine. So far it appears that it is mostly 2000 model year vechiles haveing the majority of the problems. The problem is that the foundry that poor these rotor have the worst quality control. They are not adhereing to the specified steel composition. You have to chech each lot of steel for quality before you pour it. If it is not right you have to find a place to dump all that molten steel. It is not easy to do this. It is much easier to just pour the steel into the castings and call it a day. The last place that the quality control manager wants to be is at the hot humid line checking steel. The foundry also has to be set up to easily dump the steel. Some of the foundrys that Dodge, Chevy, and Ford are outsourceing to have dirt floors and are not as advanced in their methods as we were during the civial war. They are getting exactly what they are asking for cheap!!

You guys really make me think that the brake problem is strictly a 2000 problem. My 2001 3.9 CC is doing fine. Another 150 miles and it will turn 10,000 with no problems with the brakes. I have towed a 19ft boat with it and a trailer with three snowmobiles and it works great. I'm not trying to boast, as I really do feel for you guys, I just spent over $300 on brakes for my Jeep Grand Cherokee. I know how you feel!

I'm not really complaining at all. Well I guess I am. The truck did make it over 30,000 miles. I love it otherwise. Not a problem yet...knock on wood

I had no problems with my 98 CC other than they brakes were really wimpy. My 00 QC has slightly less winpy brakes (has the 11 X 2" rears)but the rotors are warped at 23K. I can easily believe the quality control issue, or mabey it is in part that a lot of the 00 trucks are QC's, which are heavier. All I know is that the ploblems we are fighting are NOTHING compared to the early Super Duty Fords.

Rotors on Dakotas are five star pieces of sh*t.
Period.
THis is what happens when a stuffed shirt decides to knock a few cents off the cost and outsource it to Mexico. NAFTA made it easier than ever to do this because there is no tariff on imported parts now. Which is why beancounters have no business in automotive design.
As a result, the cheaper cost translates into cheaper quality. This was not the issue 20+ years ago when you could run a pre oil crisis land yacht many thousands of miles before even thinking of rotors.
Trust me, I have replaced rotors 4 times on mine! At least the dealer was good enough to work with me AFTER the 12/12,000 warranty had run out.
Guess he liked me? I don't know.
The consensus seems to be raybestos or bendix aftermarket. I don't recall too many complaints on those.

FYI>>>>>>We didn't HAFTA have NAFTA!

Hmmmm... 12,000 mile warranty. So I'm to understand that my brakes, a critical safety item, on a new vehicle, aren't going to stop me after 12,000 miles? And I can improve the quality of this critical safety item by spending a few hundred more dollars out of my pocket after purchase to rectify the cost cutting corner?

And what happened to Ford and Firestone over the same kind of issues? Is this not a simular issue that should be a concern for the NTSB?

Brakes are somewhat important when it comes to preventing death on the highway. But that is just my opinion.

Our 2001 2WD Quad Cab hasn't had any problems with warpage. I rotate my own tires instead of the minimum wage kid at Sears with the air wrench and no torque limiter or tightening pattern.

My 2WD is lighter than the 4WD with out the transfer case an additional differential. I also have the 9" differential with the 11"x2" rear drums and stopping power is efffective.

Maybe the problem is with the 9" brakes and 4WD trucks? Another issue may be transmission type, automatic transmissions don't have the engine braking capability of the manual transmission, as they freewheel on deceleration, I believe. So the load with automatic transmissions on the brakes would be higher.

Driving technique can also have an effect on the lifetime of the brakes. Many people drive stoplight to stoplight as though they are at the drag strip. This applies sudden heating and rapid cooling to the brake parts (drums & rotors).

I like to drive reasonably between stoplights as I see no reason to get in a hurry to sit at the next stoplight for a couple of minutes.

In a 5-mile stretch to work in the morning I do 55 instead of 65. All the folks doing 65 are sitting at the stoplight, it turns green as I pull in behind them. They gained noting with the 10mph difference over the 5 mile stretch.

I often wonder if they have ever thought about that, and realize they don't. It occurs to me that they are probably not even thinking of the driving they are doing at all, and in some cases it is reflected in the driving they do (left lane to off-ramp, cutting off people in the right lane).

Scary, isn't it?

A BIG problem with the front brake problems, is that they're minimal at best.

AND, that the rear brakes are not in adjustment! Putting way more strain on the front brakes. If you brake hard, does it nowedive?-yep, rear brakes are'nt doing anything!

Do you reverse and slam on the brakes?, repeatedly? Well you SHOULD! That's what adjusts the rears automatically! Virtually NO-ONE does that! Then they bi$ch and moan about the poor rotors, etc.!

Read this, read it all, and pay attention.

http://www.stoptech.com/whitepapers/warped_rotors_myth.htm

Now IF you adjust your rear brakes, don't drive like an idiot, then, this isn't your problem. Never mind.

This is a real simple issue. Take a very heavy truck, put really small brakes under it and watch it warp the hell out of them. Try cross drilled/slotted rotors this will help with heat buildup and reduce the warping. Also dont forget to use a torque wrench on the lug nuts.

on a recent trip to Florida from Massachusetts, my left front caliper overheated and boiled the fluid causing both sides to almost lock in the front. this is on a 2002 4wd quad, with 20,000miles. I went to a dealer in Conneticut who replaced the left front caliper and hose, both rotors and pads. I made it to Orlando and the passenger side caliper started to overheat. The dealer there replaced the caliper, rotor and both sides pads. I was in stop and go traffic at both times. I have always been nice to my brakes and in well over one million miles ( I have D.O.T. certificates from driving truck ) I have never had a problem like this. Now I am just wondering if and when it will happen again. I have ABS only in the rear, so it is not the pump. I usually keep the trans in 2nd (auto) in such traffic so that I am not constantly on the brakes. Brakes usually last me about 60 to 70,000 miles....

Dave I hear where you are coming from but until Dakota owners
start dying in big enough numbers no one is going to do
anything about our brakes. It took a lot of deaths before
anything happened to Ford (the recall king) and Firestone.

I have a Dakota with 65K on it. Recently and intermittetly the front brakes are not releasing, mostly passenger side. My mechanic cannot figure out what it is. Caliper pins are free, flexible hoses ok, no leakage in the master cylinder, rear brakes seem to be adjusted properly.

I have read many posts on this site, but have not found any specific answers to the front brake problem which many people see to have experienced.

A previous post from Pee Dee mimics my problem closely.

Has anyone found a solution, or something that I can tell my mechanic.

Thanks

Ihave a 04 qc 1000 mi. i had to stop fast to avoid a deer, and i was not impressed with the braking power. I dont have A.B.S.and they did not lock up. It was a close call!!! I drive a 05 chev van 3500 for work and it will stop on a dime!! I hate chevys, but i feel safer in it. Ihave owned dodges since 1980 10 to be exact, but since diamler took over things sure seem to go down hill!! If i buy another dodge it wont be a new one! ( do we consider dodge as a import now?) later.
