Subject: overhead console? IP: Logged
Message: Can anyone tell me if I can install the overhead communication center in my overhead console. I have the stupid clip in it's place. Is the plug for the module in the roof harness? (is it plug & play) or does the roof harness and/or computer need to be changed?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
(I found this question in the archives and I have the same question but no one responded in May of this year. Can anyone help know on this issue?)

Message: I was wanting to do the same thing. You are talking about the computer in place of the clip right?
I was told by my dealer that some trucks are pre wired and some are not. He said to drop the headliner down and see if the wiring harness is up there. There are a couple of other people on here too that are wanting to attempt this but I don't think anyone has been successful. Someone correct me if I'm wrong!
I got a console with the computer off of Ebay but I haven't had a chance to find out if the harness is there or not.
Also, I heard that plugging the console into the wrong wires can fry the console or even your pcm, so be careful.
If you find any additional information please let me know. I will likewise post any new information I find.

Message: Try e bay. I wanted to do this on my 95 but it was too much $$$. I asked the service guys at the dealer and they said that besides the money issue, the electrical system was not set up for it. So I gave up. Now I order it in the truck from the factory and have no problems.

Message: Well I was looking into it last year at about this time. From the dealer they said it would cost me 300 bucks for the head and 600 for the wireing. Don't ask me why the wireing was so pricy. The head unit now is 320. I was looking at junk yards all around the country and they would only sell me the entire console for 200 bucks(best price from Denver). Also you would need to get the sensor which is mounted on the passanger side, right in the front next to the radiator. I found the plug. It is wraped up in tape in the wireing on the left front side of the engine compartment.
I pulled off my console and looked at my wireing to the console. There are 3 wires. 2 are being used by the current plug in my console. I am pretty sure what is currently being used is power and ground. I have not been able to find a good answer on what that 3rd wire is. So I am guessing it is prewired I just need the head unit and its connection to soo what it looks like. HEY EALLAN you have the head unit. What does that factory plug look like on your head unit?
Sorry for the long post. That is the information I have compiled so far. Lost intrest when I couldn't find the head unit for less that 100 bucks. Maybe you can excite me again.
Thanks

Message: You do not have to tear it apart to see the connection. I just pulled the console off. I don't even know if that is the right wireing. all I know is the wireing that plugs into the wireing at the console has 3 wires. 2 are being used. Power and ground. I don't know what the 3rd wire is used for. I looked at a wireing diagram for a 2000 kota. That diagram looked greek to it. I did not understand it at all. I want to know what kind of factory connector is on that head unit.

y22man,
I might be way off base here, but are you referring to the three wires connected to the overhead console (without the computer)?
If so, the three wires in my '99 base console are all for the overhead lights. There is a pink, yellow and I can't remember the 3rd color. It's the third wire (the color I can't remember) which controls the lights by pushing on them. The pink and yellow are used by the door open switch and the dash knob.

Message: My 2000 base console without the computer has 3 wires. 2 are in use and the 3rd wire is not being used. The factory plug on the console side has 2 connections. The 3rd has a blank. In other words it has no conection to the 3rd wire(on the console side). That is what I guessed. There could be a link to the 3rd wire inside the conection, but ussually when I saw that it ment the wire was not being used. I admited I could have been wrong but nobody has been able to help. Your discription makes sence. But I will admit. I know nothing about electrical systems. any help would be grand.
Sorry if I mislead anyone. I am just tring to walk in the dark.

Message: The console currently on ebay has the clip.
The head unit has a 12-pin connector. I only have the 3-pin connector. From what I can gather, only 6 of the 12 pins are used -
2 - Ambient temp sensor
2 - CCD bus (+) and (-)
2 - power for the lights
I have the color code for all wires used but when I looked under the dash I decided not to mess with it. I have a great alarm guy who knows just about everything about wiring, I plan on asking him what he can do. (I don't think it is a big job - just taping into the 6 wires (and possibly using the current overhead console wires for the 2 light connections, so only 4 wires)
y22man - when alldata comes back up, I will email you the diagrams that I found. Also, I will email you a pic of the head unit with the 12-pin harness. If anyone else wants this info, let me know!!

Message: Well,
I finally found out that the 2000 and the 2001 trucks are wired differently (No thanks to DC) So now I can't use the console I bought because it is for a 2000 and I have a 2001! So now I have to find one for the 2001 instead. (If anyone has one, let me know!) I am thinking of either selling the one I have or rigging it up so that the lights, compass, and temp work, all I will be missing is the fuel mileage and trip mileage, which comes from the CCD bus on the 2000 model but not the 2001 (I think) Anyway, I am still looking to buy the service manual so I can be sure I can't use the one I have.
Anyway, just a heads up to everyone!!
Also, anyone with a 2000 turck, I have compiled a lot of reasearch, diagrams, pin-outs, connector locations, etc... It doesn't look too hard to do, you just have to be able to connect into the CCD bus for the mileage stuff. Let me know and I can email you anything you will need.

Message: I'm kinda late on this one but...
I added power windows, mirrors, and locks (with RKE) to my '99 and the wiring harnesses are a MESS. You'll have to change the main dash wiring harness (pull the steering column and dash), the cab harness (drop the headliner), and probably the computer box on the right of the glove compartment. I never would have started this venture had I known the headaches (and $$$$)
Going through my pain, I found out there were about 5 different main dash, door, and cab harnesses depending on what combination of features you had: RKE, alarm, overhead computer, power locks/mirrors, etc. The overhead computer required a unique harness that had an additional 1 or 2 shielded cables going to the overhead.
Shees, seems like it'd be cheaper for DC to just make one harness set with all the connectors/wires for all the optional equiptment.
