Subject: A/C clutch on/off IP: Logged
Message: My A/C clutch cycles on and off even when I have the heater going. I've heard this is normal and it is not supposed to affect mileage. However, how frequently should it cycle on/off? At idle, with the heat on, it cycles on about every minute for about 10 seconds. That seems to be WAY too much. Also, I'm installing an electric fan with an A/C clutch relay control. I guess I can expect the fan to cycle on and off? I can even feel when the A/C clutch kicks in when I'm on cruise going down the road. Any help? Much thanks.

Message: Yes that is normal. If you don't want it to cycle then just switch it off of the defrost, to the floor or vent. It cycles on defrost ot dry the incoming air so that you windsheild won't fog up.

Message: Thanks CW!! That makes sense about drying the incoming air. Are you happy with the results of your ported throttle body? Do the work yourself? Also, did the TPS adjustment really make a difference on response? I do know you'll be happy with the results of a cold air intake along with the Flowmaster exhaust. My Dak really came alive with the two in combination. I mounted the IAT (stock) into the ait intake tube. Thanks again.

Message: I just want to be sure that what my truck is doing is normal . . .
At all times when I place the heater control in the defrost position,
the engine jumps from about 600 rpm to 900 rpm and stays there
CONTINUOUSLY . . . it never drops from 900 rpm till I shut off the
defroster. While it is sitting at 900 rpm I do hear the AC clutch
kicking in and out (which also causes +/-100 rpm) every once
and a while.

Message: The jump in idle is normal. It will happen when you turn the AC on as well. It increases idle so that when the AC clutch engages it doesn't bog down the motor.

Message: The operation of the AC compressor is clearly documented in the service manual.
Simplified;
Assuming that "cooling" ic called for by way of the interier controlls...
There is a pressure cutoff switch on each side of the compressor (HIGH and a LOW) As long as the pressure on the high side is below a safety point and the pressure on the low side is above cutoff... the compressor is signalled to engauge.
This causes the "cycling" of the compressor clutch.
Personally, I performed the "modification" of my A/C system to improve its efficency and ELIMINATE condensation buildup on the accumulator.

Message: Andy VH. I am quite happy with the results of my ported throttle body. I did it my self with a dremal tool and sanding drums. It really helps throttle responce and part throttle performance. Hard to tell an the full throttle have lots of snow here. Cost like $5.00 for sanding rolls. The TPS adjustment made very little to no difference but I did it because it was free.
I am hoping my air filter will be here friday, then I can get the welder out and start building.
Sorry for the slow reponse I have been out of town on business.

Message: If it's frozen, either it's overcharged (too much freon); the expansion valve is sticking; there is a system clog; or the compressor is running continuously when it should not. Most common are the first two I listed.
