Subject: Is there a recall.... IP: Logged
Message: ...on dodge dakotas for immediate replacement with a Japanese truck? I'm just wondering because my 2K QC 4x4 has spent some serious time at the shop. The tranny's goin', the paint's goin', the brakes are goin', the front-end makes noise now, the bed pops and squeaks, and I feel like it might just die any time soon. It looks great, tons o' power, and rides like a car with minimal road-noise. But that's it. From reading the posts, it looks like you've all been having problems too. What in the world is my wonderful nation doing? Do they want my hard-earned money to go to the execs in Japan? (Toyota). Talked to a couple of dodge dealers, they won't even call back. Heck, maybe it's just washington state? Maybe they ship all the perfectly good trucks down south or something. :-)
Thanks for listening, even if you may not have wanted to. :-)

Message: A Toyota or Nissan will run forever... but has no "Soul". The CHevys and Dodges have all kinds of "soul" but the reliability $u(k$!
I chose the Dakota for the V8 and resistance to rust. No other truck on the planet has the same resistance to rust and that is my biggest issue with all of the chloride that is spread on the roads here in Vermont.
My Past pickup trucks (Nissan and Volkswagen) Rusted into oblivion. When there are holes in the bed large enough to lose a basketball... well, you get the idea.

Message: I hear what you're saying about your truck, but it's not just Dodge. Believe me when I say that I'm not trying to minimze your problems or defend Dodge. I've been VERY frustrated from time to time with Dodge. But every single vehicle I've bought new has had some sort of problem, either from day two of ownership or shortly thereafter. Ask me about my Toyota that had a really bad clutch chatter starting on day two, but I couldn't get it replaced under warranty because the clutch was considered a "wear item." Ask me about my VW's ABS that would shut down after driving for more than 30 minutes, and the creaky door and dash panels. Ask me about my former Dakota's propensity to spit brake fluid onto the right front pad. Ask me about my current truck's vibration that nobody can seem to isolate and fix.
My point is this: whether you spend $9K on a Hyundai, $25K on a Dodge, $50K on a Lexus, or $100K on a Benz, it's a gamble. There is not a car manufacturer in business today that can guarantee absolutely no problems with your vehicle. True, some brands generally have fewer problems than others, but at least in my experience the two most troble free vehicles that I've owned have been my Dakotas, with my 94 being the most trouble free. Neither Dak has ever left me stranded (something I can't say about the VW or Toyota), neither one has ever failed to start (again I can't say that about the VW or Toyota), and neither one has ever died mysteriously while driving down the street (again, I can't say that about the VW or Toyota). And none of the manufacturers have come even close to providing complete warranty staisfaction (Toyota didn't even try; VW and Dodge at least tried repeatedly to isolate and fix the problems, although both were unsuccessful).
If I'd had your experience, I probably wouldn't ever buy a Dodge again. I'll never buy a Toyota, not because of warranty service, but because they are generally dull vehicles. I'd buy another VW despite my problems because I love the way they drive, and I'd buy another Dodge because I like the way they look and drive. So if you choose to buy a different product, I wish you well. But understand that whatever you buy has the potential to be a lemon.

Message: Something to think about... If all the car companies built cars that had no problems and lasted forever there would be no incentive for anyone to buy a new one. Then they would all go out of business. Just a thought.

Message: Thanks for the responses guys. Believe me, though, I can take normal wear and tear but this isn't normal. I'll buy another one when it eventually wears out but not after it constantly takes me to the shop. I just want a vehicle that will last me 5+ years without having me back at the shop every few weeks. I want a vehicle that, if I had to take it to the shop, would be treated well and repaired competantly without any hassle to myself. I realize other vehicles are having problems and I know I'm takin' a gamble, but damn, I paid good money for this truck. Statistically, our vehicles aren't the best, you might get a great one and you might get a lemon. But I was just hopin' for a great one, I guess. Oh well, I'll probably dump it for a Tundra or something. I do love the look, the ride, and the power of this thing, though. Can't top that.
Thanks again,
YJ

Message: Hey, YJ, I feel youre pain man, I have completely lost all confidence in Dodge products. My wife had two Dodge vehicles, 95 and 98 models, and they were P>O>S. We got fed up and bought a Honda. dont even get me started on this cars superlatives. I dont think you could find a better 4 cyl. than Honda. Excelent vehicle. Now, I did'nt get onthis site to trash Dodge, I have a WONDERFUL 95 cc v6 , 120,000 miles, still runs great, great truck! and if it ever dies, my 2 options are new motor, or Toyota Tundra. I know the new Daks run good, but they have noyhing on the level of refinment in the Tundra. besides It's built in the USA by Americans, and has less foriegn parts content than the new Dodge products do. If you dont believe me try looking at the window stickers. Anyway when it comes to getting the most for my families hard earned dollar, I ain't too proud to turn to some thing other than a Dodge.

Message: I hate to say it but dodge and toyota coincide w/ each other. Most of our trucks are made w/ Toyota parts. Man i would love to get a tundra. Once you ride in one you are hooked. Very Very fast and they stop on a dime. does anyone know if they come w/ LSD? My friends is open differential kinda sux. My uncles 91 tacoma ran until it blew up one day,not sure about the mileage somewhere around 310,000 miles. if they made a shortbed tundra it would be sweet. Or if they dropped the 4.7 into a tacoma.

No such thing as a silent recall.

Message: No myths except for the Toyota parts one. I'm trading my 01 Dak for a Tacoma, if it doesn't happen to fall apart first.
Latest bit of Dodge superiority. The botton that locks the lid on the center console fleww out on the highway and now the lid just flaps in the air.
POS American design/build. Bring on the Japanese.

Message: That's ok dude. Your case is the exception, not the rule. You want to run, no one's going to cry with you. People bail all the time, otherwise Dodge would never have regained their truck owner base. Owner's bailed from all makes in 1994 and 1997 to own Dodge trucks. Guess what, now the quality is better, and you want to leave.....BYE.
Someone earlier made a comment in this thread about the problems "everybody" else is having with their Dakotas. My response to that is this: whiners whine louder than satisfied owners do. I am a part of everybody, but I have a 99 Dakota with 80,000 miles on it and NO, I repeat...NO failures that have cost me much money. So lets revise that statement....everybody else is having problems with their Dakotas EXCEPT IMRidiculous.

Message: Well, after reading this i am glad that there are other trucks out there like mine(YJ) I have all the same problems and have tried time after time to get them fixed and no one can fix them(Especially sway bar bushings, and noise in the front end.) It is a never ending battle with my truck to keep her in great shape. Dont get me wrong but the dakota is the nicest looking truck for its size out there(PLus the v8) but they are impossible to keep in good shape. I have owned dakotas for 7 years now and cannot get over the amount of time it has been in the garage. While it is not major problems, it is the little stuff that agravates me nonstop. I would like to think that dodge will improve but from my track record and a couple on here i am not convinced that they will.(the sad part is that i was actually going to purchase a six pac camper for my quad cab but considering i can never keep the truck in tip top condition i wont now.
