Sounds Like you make a point HSKR!!! hehe My 2001 cc will shift out of gear when i want it to ie: no keys but actually i like the fuction of not having to push the brake in. Despite that fact it is a safety issue for people and an annoyance for others im gonna go with the i dont care group on this issue and as for the parking brake being used all the time???? what idiot is gonna use it in 20 degree wheather all night. i know a few of you posted to use it all the time your the reason i can get a good laugh in the morning on my way to the ski resort while you figure out how to unfreeze your brakes

Well My 2002 R/T had this feature then i disconected it because it bugged the heck out of me.

I live in canada so maybe trucks and cars are a little diffrenct but.
1. The keys have to be in the on position to shift gears. Or the shifter has to be in the park position to pull the keys out.
2. The truck has emergency brake causing the truck not to roll.
3. I love not having that stupid feature.
This feature has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with driving.

There was no mandatory saftey device for a brake to shift interlock at the time the Dakotas were made so how would Dodge be any more responsible then the millions of other cars made in the past. I got into a big argument with the nannys over on Edmunds Town hall about our minivan which is the same setup as the Dakota. You have to have the key on to shift the lever, so it some kid is moving the shifter it's because you had the keys in it, or you left a kid in your idling truck. It doesn't matter if they can reach the brake or not. My daughter can easilly reach the brake and the shifter at the same time, yet that doesn't make her capable of driving my van. So if she did it in a Ford say with that interlock, does that make ford responsible for my own stupidity of letting her play in the car with the keys? People need to take responsibility for their own actions. These kind of lawsuits only drive up costs to the consumers, make a tiny amount of money for those named in the class action, and a crap ton of cash for the lawers. I wouldn't sign into one if I were you, it means you have to accept the settlement as your only relief, if you actually did have a problem with the way the shifter operates, and you killed your kid, then you would be better having the otion to sue as an individual. If it is deemed to be absolutely necessary as a saftey feature by big government, they will make it mandatory to put on all cars, not just the Dakotas, in which case you didn't need to enter the class action suit. So the class action suit is a no win situation, unless you are a lawer. Personally I like little things like the no brake interlock to be present in society, it helps thin the gene pool of stupidity.
