Subject: To sunroof or not to sunroof?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have the option of a power sunroof with sunshade from the dealer for my DAK for about $1100 Should I go with it. They had a Durango there with one and it was really nice. Are the aftermarket ones reliable and leak free? I heard the older ones left something to be desired. What brand is best? This will be a lease vehicle but as I understand it since it will be a dealer installed option on a new vehicle having a hole in the roof wont count against me if I turn it in at the end.

Thanks,
Bryan

If you wear a baseball cap they are great. About 12:00 Noon it is real annoying.
But they do look cool and unique.

No one I know uses their sun/moon roof 2 months after that get them. I do know of several cases where they leak, rust and require new motors.

I use the money and spend it on something useful like a bigger engine, performance mods, women, etc.....

Not using them after 2 months? I used mine from day one till the day i sold the car 4 years later. Never a spot of rust or a drop of water.

I use mine all the time. Aftermarket would be the way to go. 1100 bucks is outrageous.
ine was 500 installed. Never leaks, and no rust. It has been in for 2 1/2 years.

low99, I think he's talking power moonroof and you're talking a flip-up style. I've never heard of a power moonroof that would be $500 installed. $1100 is more like it.

That being said, go for it on the sunroof. Dealers have plenty of experience having them installed, so no worries of it being done by some rookie shop where you'll have problems with it later. ASC is one of the best know brands and they have installation shops all over the country. Had one in my last truck and loved it. By all means, go for it!

WARNING! I have a sunroof in my 2001 QC and love it. I use it almost eveyday either by just popping it up, or removing it completely.
However, there is something that should be known before one is installed, either in a Durango or Dak.
There is a support beam that runs just behind and above the front passengers' heads that cannot, or at least, should not be cut.

I was going to have a very large roof put in mine when the guy that was going to install it noticed this beam and thought it better to go smaller. He knows what he is talking about since he installs all of the sunroofs for the local Dodge and GM dealers.

Actually, my moonroof is power, not a flip up. It was $500 installed. I DO think that $1100 is outrageous. I live in Massachusetts, and that was the price that I paid. The flip up style would have run me 250, so I opted for the power.
Peace,
Justin

Justin, looking at your profile, I see now what style you are talking about. That's different than the ASC which retracts within the roof on a club cab. Installation alone is about 8 hrs and at the labor rates in Calif. $500 wouldn't even cover the labor.

You got a great deal on yours and if you're happy with it, that's all that really counts. A good install of a quality unit should never leak or rust and the ones that do are simply second rate hardware or poor install jobs.

Enjoy and take care.

Oh, I see. I was misunderstanding I guess. I didn't realize he was talking about the kind that actually retracts into the roof, which is definately a MUCH more difficult and pricey job. Mine in just the glass that slides back and up. My mistake. Later!!
Peace,
Justin
PS. Do you have any advice for the thumbnail? I've been messing around with some pics forever, but they all keep coming out blurry!!??!!

Justin,
The reason your thumbnails are coming out so blurry is because of the size that you are making them. I don't remember the size they need to be, but what you are uploading is smaller than what they need to be. So, the software that is being used for the message boad is stretching them out to fit in the box. That is what makes it blurry. It is kinda like taking a balloon with a picture on it and blowing it up. It will appear much different, and blurrier (???) when blown up, unless it is designed otherwise.
