Subject: Fog Light Switch IP: Logged
Message: I put some fog lights in my dak the other day and I was wondering about the factory switch. I've got them run separate, I didn't wanna worry with the factory stuff.
Can I get a factory switch and use the wires i ran?
Will the factory switch take wires or will it just work with the plug that's behind the dash that plugs in?
thanks a lot!

Message: If you want to use the factor fog light switch I suggest you order the fog light wiring pakage from mopar acessories. You can't easily wire directly to the switch without the plug and you will have to use a relay in the system if you haven't already done that.

Message: My fog lights are on my light knob. I twist for lights and pull for fog lights (after twisting). Like Ford's (I probably sound stupid explaining all that, but I don't know exactly how the "older" [pre-2001] fog light switches work). I put a set of KC Daylighters on a Safari Bar in the front and I put that switch in the dash with two screws right below the 4wd selector knob (again, I think that knob is new for 01) -- I have the wires running through that black "straw-like" wire covering. The wires aren't hidden and tucked away or anything, but it still looks very professional (from my viewpoint anyway) -- I used to wire stuff like that at my old job, so I know a LITTLE about what I'm talking about.

Message: i've got the lights in and everything and they work fine. I'm using the switch now that came with the kit.
I just wanna hook up the three wires to the factory switch if possible so the switch will look clean and fit in the little whole properly.
thanks

Message: Youwon't be able to hook aftermarket lights into the factory switch. Not the same type of circuit. If you try it, your fog lights will stay on all the time no matter what position the switch is in. Even OFF>

Message: man that sucks! one more question....
one of my fog lights is brighter than the other. I've sometimes seen fog lights this way on some cars and have wondered why one is brighter than the other. I hooked mine up correctly I think.
Could it be the ground on the dimmer one? I don't really know. the system uses a relay and a couple of grounds. Only one ground for both lights so that doesn't make sense.
well thanks!

Message: The cars you see on the road with one light brighter than th other probably have badly adjusted lights. One is probably pointing more towards the ground making it look dimmer than the one pointing right in your eye. Don't knwo what to say about your though. Possibly bad wireing harness leaking some voltage somewhere

Message: you can use the factory plugs for aftermarket fog lamps just remember that the plugs have constant power to them untill you put the relay in the relay box under the hood then you will have control over the lights

Message: You can't use the factory plugs for aftermarket lights. Been there, tried that. Even with the relay in the box, it still supplies constant power to the lights. The relay in the box, and the switch in the dash are used to complete the ground circuit and the lights turn on. Pluggin in aftrmarket lights closes the ground automatically and the lights stay on all the time.

Message: It is very simple to hook up. (I have done it) I have friends that work at dealerships. If the truck did not come with fog lights it is OK the light plugs are in there. They are tied up with tie wraps in the area. buy the relay and switch from mopar parts. Install the relay in the relay box where it calls for the driving lights. Snap the switch in. and it is ready to go. The reason one light is brighter is because you jumped from one light to the other and have a little voltage loss. If you run seperate wires to each light from the supply it should get rid of your problem.

Message: After reading all of the above post, I figured out the aftermarket pilot lights with the factory switch. My lights came on all the time just like mentioned above. I found that the aftermarket Pilot lights are grounded through their mounting brackets. To stop this, I removed the lamp and U bracket mounted to the lamp. I then installed a plastic washer under the two screws holding the U bracket to the lamp. This washer broke the ground and when I hooked everything back up, the fog lights work just like they were factory installed. If I wasn't clear in this post, just reply and I will try to explain better.
Good luck to all!!
