Subject: Tire size... IP: Logged
Message: Does anybody know what the next larger size LT tire is from the 31 X 10.5 X 15? I have a 2000 4.7 SLT Plus and the tires seem smaller than the ones they're putting on the 2002's. I'm going to check it out but does anybody know what's the largest size you can put on a 15 inch rim?

Message: Hey Greeno,
The next size up from a 31x10.50 tire is a 32x11.50 for a 15" rim. I posted earlier this week on this very subject, and was able to get some input (some off-line), that the larger tire will in fact fit a late-model 4x4 version Dak without modifications (and with no, or perhaps a very slight amount of rubbing, possibly on full, lock-to-lock turns). In my case, I have a new set of BFG 32x11.50R15LT All-Terrain KO's on order through my local tire dealer. And since we are currently getting hit hard with a LOT of snow in southeastern Utah, I am looking forward to getting this new set of tires on my '99 Dak CC (with a set of Edelbrock Performer IAS shocks) ... the combination should be a BIG improvement over the stock Goodyear Wrangler RT/S tires and stock shocks.

Message: The tires seem smaller on your 2000 because they are on 15 rims. The 2002 tires are mounted on 16 rims. they are 265/70 r16's for 4x4 with tire and handling group.

Message: What is better--the LT tires or the 265/70R15's? What is the difference, good or bad, between the light truck tire and the passenger size tire? Thanks for your help guys.

Message: Greeno,
For comparison examples, I looked at the tire chart for BFG All-Terrain KO's. There will be differences with other tire brands and models, but the following may give you an idea of some of the relative differences between such tires (and by the way, I couldn't find a "265/70R15" ... there was only a "265/70R16" for that size in the BFG AT KO's). You may find it more useful to go the the website of the tire manufacturer you are interested in and check out their information specific to the tire you are want to get. Anyway, here is the BFG info for you ...
1) 215/75R15 ... load range C, recommended rim width = 5.5"-7.0", section width = 8.4" on 6.0" wide rim, overall diameter = 27.8", revs/mile at 45 MPH = 748, max load per tire = 1,765 lbs at 50 MPH.
2) 31x10.50 R15LT ... load range C, recommended rim width = 7.0-9.0", section width = 10.5" on 8.5" wide rim, overall diameter = 30.7", revs/mile at 45 MPH = 677, max load per tire = 2,250 lbs at 50 MPH.
3) 265/70R16 ... load range D, recommended rim width = 7.0"-8.5", section width = 10.7" on 8.0" wide rim, overall diameter = 30.7", revs/mile at 45 MPH = 678, max load per tire = 2,835 lbs at 65 MPH.
4) 32x11.50 R15LT ... load range C, recommended rim width = 8.0"-10.0", section width = 11.4" on 9.0" wide rim, overall diameter = 31.7", revs/mile at 45 MPH = 656, max load per tire = 2,530 lbs at 50 MPH.
HTH,
Don
