Anyone out there know how to remove the overhead console? Ive got the 2002 Quad Cab model, and I want to get to the wiring harness under the trip computer.... I'm installing a radar detector, and I need to get power there. Theres a single screw in the front of the console, just above the mirror, but removing the screw doesn't free the console. You can bump it back about 1/2 inch, but thats all. I dont' want to break it, nor do I want to have to spend $110 for the service manual right now. Any help appreciated.

Hey Ed, my buddy has a 98 cobra conv. and he got some kind of sticky puddy (not a lot) and stuck it to his dash, I know this doesn't answer your question but it's another option, plus cops can't see it on the dash, from what I hear cops might pull you over for speeding but if they see you have a r-detector the odds are they'll write the ticket, (by the way the puddy doesn't mess up the dash at all either)

I would suggest opening the sunglasses bin or the garage door opener bin. There should be some screws in there that you can remove.

I routed my power wire along/under the edge of the headliner where is meets the windsheild. Remove the "Grab" strap and the plastic trim piece between the roof and the dash on the driver side. Its easy to run the wiring fro there to the fuse panel or under the dash and tap into any of the many wires which are fused and turn on and off with the ignition switch.
I have a Passport and routed the factory wire harness this way. Its easy and the wiring is not visible. I have my detector mounted just at/below the windshield tint line, very close to the passenger side of the rear view mirror. It is not very noticeable.
I was stopped the other day by a county Sheriff because my vehicle was reported as "suspicious". I am a real estate appraiser and take photos of houses to use in my reports. Some of the residents (understandably) got a little worried about having their house photographed and called the police. Anyway, the officer (young guy) like my truck and during our conversation, he commented on the Radar Detector. I explained to him that I use my detector to keep from speeding. Everytime it goes off, I check my speed to see that I'm legal. I really don't use it to speed (well maybe once). My detector has saved me a time of two....

I mounted a flip down TV in the portion of my overhead console where the "paper clip" is supposed to be (on models without the trip computer) and used a firm tug to remove the whole console. Of course AFTER you remove the screw in front of the mirror. There's actually two clips (one on each side) that hold it in addition to the screw. My 2001 should be the same as your 2002.

Don't forget too that your radar detector may require more voltage/amps that the trip computer. Mine did and I had to run a separate wire to the fuse box. I just used the above method of pushing the wire under the headliner between the windshield and the liner. You also want to make sure that the location you draw power from works the way you want it to (power only when key is turned on, all the time, only when the engine is started, etc., etc.) I didn't want power to my detector when the key wasn't used because you'd have to turn it off at the detector everytime you got out of the truck otherwise it'll (eventually) drain the battery.
