Subject: gas tank fill up ? IP: Logged
Message: when i bought my truck ( 2001 quad cab 3.9 ) the dealer told me that becaues it had california emissions ( 50 state legal ) that when i fill it up, the engine could not be running and that when the pump clicked off that you could not put anymore gas in the tank and if you tried gas would spill out of the filler neck? they said it was due to the fume recovery system.

Message: My '99 Dakota has the North East emmissions which is supposed to be the same as California's and my dealer never mentioned that. I have fueled my Dak with the engine running without any problems. Also, I have gone as much as $0.25 past the initial click and fuel has never spilled.

Message: Be careful with the gas fill up on the 2001. The dealer gave me an amendment to the owners manual. It states that when you close your gas cap, make sure it clicks at least four times...If it is not tightened enough, you will get a check engine light and the dealer would charge you to clear it. I filled mine yesterday and went at lest 15 cents after the initial shut off and no spillage..

Message: I go past the first shut-off every time I fill up, mine is a CA version, and I have had no problems. Like hojo said, when you put the cap back on make sure that it clicks 3-4 times. As I hear, if you don't hear it click 3-4 times you will get a check engine light that the dealer will have to shut off. Some dealers may charge you to turn the light off.

Message: From what I've been told you don't want to fill up with any car or truck running because you lose pressure in the fuel system and that will cause the check engine light to come on. Topping off I couldn't tell you I have the 2000 slt reg cab 4x4 and it has cal. emmisions and I top off no problem.

Message: I always turn off my engine when refueling. It is the only way I can stay ahead of the fuel use. The first time I refuled without turning it off it took 30 - 45 minutes to refill.
I guess you all know that I am B/S'ing.
It is best to turn off the engine for safety.
