Hi everyone. I am looking at purchasing a 2002 Dakota SLT Plus with ALL the options. Seeing this is a DAK board, your replies might be biased, but I will ask the question anyway:
Is this a good truck, and is $29,000 a good price for the SLT with EVERYTHING?

As background, I am currently in negotiations with GMC over my lemon of a Jimmy. I leased it in Jan 2001 and since it has been in the shop for 2 problems, most recently 3 times in the last 2 months for tranny-type problems. If I can get out of this lease, I am gonna look at getting into a Dodge.

All replies appreciated.

Well... 29,000 is kinda high for any Dakota but if it's as decked out as you say it is I'm not surprised at the price. One thing that will help us answer your question is if you were to list more details, Reg, Club or Quad Cab? at that price it must be a 4x4. But if all else fails go to 4adodge.com and build one. Also if it helps I've got one on order almost all the options all the 4x4 HD and towing options Club Cab 4.7L. MSRP was 27,145 but I get the supplier plan which is 1% below dealer invoice which brought the price down to 25,155 or so.

Hope this helps

I got a 2001 QC SLT+ 4.7 auto 4x4 with almost all the options (it doesn't have leather and AWD). I got it about 3 months ago for $28,400 out the door. The MSRP on the truck was $29,430. I think I got a pretty good deal! You could probably get yours for a similar price (less the $2000 rebate from Dodge).
Good luck!

I guess I should have specified which truck...

It is a 2002 Quad Cab SLT Plus 4x4 with leather, 4.7 V8, Auto tranny, 16in tires, Infinity speakers w/CD changer, etc. Here in Northeren VA, the rebate is either 0% financing or $1000 cash back. this deal is only good until January, so I will probably miss out on that, due to the fact that I am on GMC's clock with how long it takes to terminate my current lease.

I take it this is a good, reliable truck? I have heard problems with Tranny...any feedback on this?

I know I'm gonna get shot down on this one but if you can get the 5.9L more torque little more hp but the best part are the mods that are out there, not to mention they've been out since the dawn of time who knows what bugs that might still not have been worked out in the 4.7L. I would have got it if I could but they don't put them in a 4x4 Club Cab only Quad Cab but I needed to get a v8

Well, let me explain a few things before you recommend the 5.9L...

I use this vehicle to commute in rush hour traffic in DC (If anyone has been here, ya know what I am talking about). The only thing that I am concerned with buying this truck, is the poor crash tests and poor gas mileage. I also have a 2001 Kawasaki Nomad 1500, that I ride the majority of the time, so the Dakota will be a vehicle to load up the dog, old lady, and kids, while still looking good. the SUVs (which I've owned and ridden), are too expensive and have no room or power (unless you wanna pay even MORE money). I really like the f act that I can get the Dakota fully loaded for less than what I would pay for a base SUV. I am not towing or hauling huge loads with this truck (I dont think my Nomad will fit on a 5 foot bed), so at the most, I will be pulling a trailer with a 700lb bike (which I dont like to do, unless I am going on a "family" vacation and cant fit the family on the bike).

With that said, how much do I gain from going from the 4.7 to the 5.9 and how many MPG will I loose by getting the bigger displacement? If I get the 5.9, should I also get the "heavy-duty service group" which includes extra Engine Cooling?

While I'm at it, what is the advantage to 3.92 rear axle ratio?

All replies appreciated.

No, I'm gonna go ahead and agree with Clevite on this one since you're looking to get an auto and don't care about gas mileage. I have the 4.7. I don't want to sound annoying, but I hate autos so that's why I never considered the 5.9. Zute, have u considered the 5 speed?

All my trucks since the 80's have been 5 speeds. I swear by em and love the control.....
but recently I injured my lower back and hip, so I prefer the auto, so it is easier on my body in stop and go traffic. I actually prefer the auto now. If I wanna have fun, I get on my bike. I want my truck to be funtional and stylish.

Pretty much fully loaded. $36,033.00 canadian dollars at 0% this is like, $23,061.12 us dollars, And you wonder why all us Canadians send our trucks down to the states when we are done with them!! I will still make 40% on my truck in 2 years.

You might notice maybe 2mpg difference between the 4.7 and 5.9 on a good day for both of them. My friend has a 4.7 auto 4x4 CC and he only gets 1mpg better than my in my heavily modded (including lead foot for driver) R/T.

I'm familiar with the beltway nightmare. Now I deal with Atlanta's Perimeter (sometimes).

Since you are getting the 4x4 (bigger wheels = taller final gearing), go for the 3.92. It will gear your truck slightly lower giving more power.

My 2000 4.7 4x4 CC 5 speed turns 2500 RPM at 80 mhp (Which will get you a wreckless driving ticket anywhere in VA last time I checked). Don't know what RPM a auto would do.

Also, the RT (The supposed racey Dak) comes with the 3.92 rear and auto. That swayed me when I was looking, but I had to have a 4x4. Get the posi traction option too.

I don't know exactly what the gain is (ask dealer) with the 5.9, but I think most of it is in torque. I think you'll lose roughtly 1 to 2 mpg with it too.

I popped for the heavy duty everything since I tow a 6 x 12 cargo trailer and go off road every chance I get. If you only tow 1,000 pounds and leave ashpalt 1 time a year, don't worry about it......However, extra cooling may help on a hot summer day when stuck in traffic on the Beltway with the AC cranked!

A Dak is the only option for a smaller truck with V-8.

I recommend the heavy duty service group regardless of how hard it gets used. The 5.9 has a distinct advantage in torque over the 4.7. I recommend the 3.55 rears as you can use the overdrive lock-out if you want to tow.

I just configured a 2002 Dakota QC SLT+ 4x4 on www.4adodge.com and I took ALL the options except for the 3.92 gear ratio. The MSRP was 30,000 so I figure the invoice would be around 3000 less.

That's a hell of a truck for that price. I can only hope that the ride and dependability is as nice.

I just bought the same truck you're looking at. Found mine at Chesterfield Dodge in Midlothian VA (richmond area). Got the 2002 Quad Cab SLT Plus, 4.7, Automatic - the one with 2 second gears, posi-trac, leather, infinity sound, overhead conv. group, power seat, trailer tow, heavy duty service group, & including bed liner and security options, paid 27,900. Had everything except full time 4wd and 4 wheel abs. Dealer invoice shown to me was 27,749, so I figured 27,900 was fair. Im sure the dealer made alot more than $150 on the truck, but he got it close to what I wanted to pay. Besides I wanted to buy before the end of Oct for the 0.0% financing. I have a 98 Jeep with the 5.2L V8, like the 4.7 much better... Engine seems smoother, more pep... Gas mileage better too. I had to look along time to find a Quad Cab with leather in virginia.

With the 3:92 ratio, is it true that it puts more strain on the engine at higher speeds? Is it mainly for tow for more power?

I have 3.92's on my 2000 4.7L. They are an excellent set of gears for me. Young with a lead foot at times. 1st gear is ultra low. I only use it when pulling a trailer. It starts off in second very easily. I don't know about engine strain because of the gears. I can't imagine mopar would include a set of gears that you can get standard if they would strain the engine. Maybe the 4.11's would strain though. I've put 30,000 miles on my Dak so far. It screams too. If you don't haul anything and you don't have a need to go fast then go with the 3.55's

I paid $19,470 for my 4.7 CC SLT w/ all the havy duty but not many of the comfort options, you should be able to get one loaded for around $25k, $26k for 4wd.

Go through Dodge's website or Autobytel and get with a fleet dealer, they typically have flat rate markups (ie: $500 over cost for anything you want, take it or leave it) and won't try to soak you.
