Message: I noticed something while driving my Dakota in our first good cold snap of the year that I've never noticed on any of my previous Dakotas. The truck is an '01 QC 4x4 4.7L auto. After leaving work, I get right on the interstate for the commute home. Normal RPM range for this truck at 70 MPH is 2000-2100 RPM. When it's cold out (26 degrees today), the truck will turn around 2500 RPM at that speed, which makes my gas mileage drop down to 9-10 MPG. The temp. gauge hits the 1/4 mark 2 miles after hitting the highway, and continues to climb about the 3/8 mark. Meanwhile, the truck is still turning 2500 RPM. After a total of 5 miles, the RPMs finally go back to 2000, and my mileage improves. I have the overdrive on. Is this normal for this engine/tranny combo?
Thanks for your input,
Dan

Message: This is a normal occurance. Until the transmission warms up, it won't shift into overdrive. It holds the previous gear until it is warmed up then it will shift. It is nothing to worry about.

Message: Actually it will shift into overdrive (4th gear), but the computer won't let the converter lock up until the engine is warmed up. This is done in the name of emissions to get the cats up to operating temperature as soon as possible.
