Subject: Weird problem w/ my 88 3.9l, help please

I've only had this truck a few weeks, so this
weekend was my first real road trip. The trip
usually takes about 3 hours, but it took around 5
w/ all the holiday traffic. But anyway, to get to
my problem, i was about 2.5 hours in to the ride
and my dak started acting weird, it would hesitate
and bog down whenever i gave it gas, and had very
little power and would start bucking once in a
while when it got bad, but it still would run. I
made it a few more miles, and finally got off and
exit. I turned it off and checked out some stuff
like the distrib. cap and plugs ect, and they all
looked fine. So after all this it had been
sitting for about 20min. So i figured screw it
and i would give it another try. She started
right up, and ran almost normal for another couple
hours untill the same thing happend and i pulled
over and let her rest for another 10 min, and then
made it home without anymore problems. Some stuff
to know:

-The temp gauge never got about halfway
-new plugs, distrib cap/rotor, and fuel filter

Some things i thought about but werent sure if
they made any sense were, clogged cat, bad fuel
filter again, overheating but not showing it (bad
t-stat?)... i dunno just brainstorming?? Any help
on this one would be great because im not really
sure what to check out, thanks a lot everyone,
this board is great. Sorry for the rambling,

-Jason

First things first. Do a self diagnostic on your truck using the CHECK ENGINE light. This will reveal codes about any problems inside the computer, probably a sensor or two.

Go here:

This is Step 1. Do that and then get back with me...

Sounds like an overheating cat. Also a hot coil will do the same thing. Did the cat smell like rotten eggs? Big cat problem.

A weak fuel pump will sometimes do similar things.

I just checked my codes, nothing looks out of the ordinary:
12 - Direct battery input to PCM was disconnected within the last 50 key-on cycles
33 - An open or shorted condition detected in the A/C clutch relay circuit
55 - Completion of fault code display on Check Engine Lamp (end of codes)

Let me know what you think, I appreciate the help,
-Jason

I was thinking it might be the cat, i didn't smell anything out of the ordianary but i'll check that out. What exactly do you mean by a 'hot' coil, too weak of a spark? too strong?? I'll give the fuel pressure a check when I get a chance too. Anything else to check out? Thanks a lot guys,

-Jason

I agree with snowman...sure sounds like a bad cat...if it does it again, look underneath, if that baby is glowing red, its BAD and clogged.
A coil getting hot will sure do that too as well as a bad fuel pump. I suspect this because of your recent filter change. I think you are on the right track with these three items.

Good luck and keep us informed of what you discover.

Thanks for all the comments guys, i just had a couple more questions about your suggestions, how hot should the coil get (to the touch that is...), or is there any other way to check how well the coil is working? Also, is there any way to check the operation of the fuel pump other then fuel pressure? Thanks again,

-Jason
