Subject: Replacement Dakota R/T Tires
IP: Logged

Message:

I was looking for some replacement tires for my 01 R/T standard cab Dakota. I am wanting to go a bit wider but maintain the same radius. I found that the 275/50/17 Nitto Tire 450 has a radius very close to the original 255/55/17 tire. Nitto Radius = 27.88 inch, Original = 28.0 inch. This is the closest I could find. I wonder if going from a 255 to a 275 will effect my turning radius? or maybe damage something because the tire is too wide?

One tire sales company told me Dodge recommended if I wanted to go wider to so to the 275/60/17. I checked and the radious of this tire is 30 inches ! I don't want my R/T to look like a 4x4 truck... haha.

Thanks for your help

Matt, the 275/50/17 is a great tire choice for the R/T rim. You wont hurt anything by using it, but you may lessen your 1/4 time! You will also not have the cool spin out as much every time you stomp your foot, since they stick ALOT better and you will just take off.

If you want them, drop me an email, and Ill gaurentee you the best price on them.

IF your radius is small than it will be easier to spin the rubber off. Why do you think 4x4ers go to lower gears (high #'s 456vs355) with bigger tires. Shorter tires are easier to spin, less drag. But the wider the tire the harder it is to spin=more traction. You also loose some mpg due to the engine turning faster to keep the same speed. example... Tire 1 100mph=3500rpm 28 radius Tire 2 100mph=3700rpm 25 radius. These numbers are just made up, but an example. Your choice to go to the 50 series seems ok, just keep an eye on the width.

Om the R/T there are alot of different types people are using.

If they like the RSA some use the BFG schrochers in a 255/55/17. Some go a bit bigger for alittle better ride and duarbility with the Toyo Proxes S/T 255/60/17. Id have to say to my knowledge most are using the Nitto NT 450 275/50/17 for more tire width and more rpms. You also have the Falken in the same size that I have heard a few are running.

Then you have the ones who are upgrading to the 20" R/T rim where you can get into alot higher speedratings in tires! (like Y which is 186+ mph rated)

What ever tires you choose, drop me an email and Ill gaurentee you the best price!

Hey Jonas, how do you like those Toyo's on your truck? They really look good on the R/T wheels!!

Do you think those are a better all around(looks, traction and ride) tire than BF Goodrich Comp T/A's or Pirelli Scorpian Zero's in a 255/60/17 size?

Thanks

I also found that the Falken Tire in the 275/50/17 size (Falken-STZ01). It states that it has exactly the same diameter as the stock tire that was standard on the R/T. Both are 28.00 (radius). The Falken is a lot wider than stock. The Nitto 450 is very close to stock radius at 27.88 and also much wider than stock.

The Falken tread wear is 420A, where the Nitto is 300A. The Falken has a 50,000 mile tread warranty. The Nitto does not.

I suppose with the Falken it will be easier to "light it up".. due to the rubber being harder? Am I correct is assuming that the lower the tread wear number... the softer the rubber?

I also found that the Nitto tire is more expensive than the Falken.

Here is the way I see it, please correct me if I'm wrong. Feel free to add Pro’s and Con’s if I missed any…

Falken = Pro = Longer tread life
Falken = Pro = Cheaper
Falken = Pro = Same diameter as original = no odometer change required
Falken = Con = May have less grip (420A)

Nitto = Pro = May have better grip (300A)
Nitto = Con = More expensive
Nitto = Con = Shorter tread life.
Nitto = Con = Speed not exactly what odometer says it is.

Which Tire looks better? Just from the net it looks like the Nitto has a better tread design, and side wall. I would like to see both before making a final decision on looks though. Can't make a good call from pics on the net.

Does anyone have pictures of either of these tires on there R/T’s? I would love to see them !

Thanks for any input you guys/gals may have...

Dakman, I LOVE THE TOYO's much better ride then all the others Ive tried, a really nice tread rating, and I get comments on how cool they look all the time! Also they stick great! I highly recommend them, and they are really low priced for what you get! (if your interested email me).

O1 R/T- Most of your assumptions are right, BUT the treadwear rating is assigned by each individual company, as far as I know there isnt really any regulation or standard. Also, any warrenty is under normal use, and based upon the wear of the tire and prorated down. So its a good thing to have but if you are going to be burning them, it really doesnt matter. I wouldnt necessary assume that a tread wear means that it will stick better or worsr either, the tread pattern, the exact types materials used, % of them, and manufactueing make a huge diffrence on wear and traction.

Just my .02$

Im running a 255/60/17. I wanted to fill my wheel wells alittle better then the 255/55/17 that are stock. AND.. I love the Toyo's. I wish they made the right size in the Toyo Proxes S/T for my 20" R/T rim that is coming out. They make a 295/45/20 but since Im going to lower my truck a bit, they will be too big.

I have a 2002 Dakota SXT V6 2WD. I bought a set of R/T wheels and want to know what size tires to put on it. Would you guys recommend 275/50/17 or should I stick with 255/55/17? I want to keep the diameter the same--I think around 28"??? and I definetly dont want a problem with the tires rubbing from being too wide? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Since this old post was dug up anyway, a R/T owner put me on to Michelin 255/55/17 LTX Pilot for the 17x9 wheels. I've got 11K on my set, and really enjoy them. Pricey, but great treadwear.
