Subject: Price to overhaul 45RFE?

Does anyone know what expense is involved in overhauling a 45RFE (Multi-speen auto in 4.7 Dakotas) transmission? I am starting to have slipping issues and have heard from other posts that this is the beginning of transmission failure.

I doubt your truck is out of warranty, unless you drive cross country regularly. Take it to the dealer.

It cost me $1716.00 to have my 97 44re rebuilt. I had a new TC, bands and clutches installed. That should give you a ballpark figure

Well, at 40k miles... I am out of warranty. Also, I have the 45RFE... which is a whole different beast than the 44RE.

Rob, have you checked the fluid level or changed the fluid and filter? I think my manual says to change it at either 30,000 or 36,000 miles. I'm no tranny expert but it might be worth a shot before you spend big dough.

Fluid levels are fine and the tranny was serviced at 24k miles. I'm not looking to overhaul it... I'm just trying to find out how much it will cost when and if it finally goes. Others have mentioned that this tranny has gone out... starting with similar symptoms. If the expense is too big, I will trade it in before it becomes a problem. I am reluctant to take it to the dealer... because if they diagnose it with a serious problem, I wont be able to trade it in (e.g., make it Dodge's problem and clean my hands of it) without them knowing about it.

Have you tried resetting the computer?? Who serviced the tranny and what fluid did they use? If it is does not meet ATF+4 standards then you will have problems! It would be unlikely but not unheard of to have a failure this early in the trahy's life. If you have kept good records of the service for your vechile you might be able to get dodge to do a good faith waranty repair!

A new (not rebuilt) 44RE from the cheaper priced dealer around here in south Jersey wanted $2300. Rebuild at the local 4x4 shop was $1800

The problem with this trany is it's a new design. Their is not going to be alot of places to get parts for it. Most older transmissions have rebuild kits with all name brand componets for $100-$150 mius a torque converter. Most rebuilds that are performed on trany's by various shops are just replaceing clutch's, steel's, band's and seals and maybe a TCC solenoid. Seldom do you get a new pump, shims, thrust bearing, sprag.......... Trany rebuilds are big time money makers for most shops. If they are truly rebuilding the whole trany and includeing a new converter then it is not quite as big of a ripoff.

I just checked Jasper and though they don't have Dakota 45RFE pricing they do have prices for 1999 Jeep 45RFE transmissions. They listed at about $2,055.00 exchange for the Jeep box and that would be similar to the Dak transmission. They offer 36 month 75,000 mile warranty. Check out www.jasperengines.com
