Message: I've had my Dakota for a little while now, and would like to start knowing her intimitly. Before I start adding mods, which I will ask many questions about annoying you later.
If I want to know how to fix things, on her what would you recomend I do?

First and foremost, regular maintenance. Such as: Spark Plugs, Wires, Cap/Rotor, Air filter, oil and oil filter, etc.
On the mods, a good modified throttle body and a K&N Gen-II Intake system for starters. That's an easy "bolt-on" project that doesn't take a whole lot of time and will definitely wake up the engine. Since you listed that you have an aftermarket exhaust system, it won't do you much good without a good intake system.

Message: Bernd,
How much would it cost for the new intake? And isn't a 97' generation III?

Bernd doesn't actually have to answer this as he is probbaly sick of this. And would prefer we start donating money for answers, so he buy more mods (if there are any more), for his truck.

Message: I think Bernd is right it's a gen II intake.
Nick if you want to save some money just make a home made intake with some ABS piping or 3" exhaust piping with a cone. You can almost get the same performance with building your own $60 intake compare to buying a $250 intake. I'm starting to build my this week.
And the money you saved from the intake, put it into a set of headers. That will help your truck bring in more air, and shoot up those gases faster and give you a louder tone out the back with your cat-back. That should really wake-up your bad boy 5.2. And maybe look into a chip, to me I wouldn't bother my truck is stick, and I think I read some where from another post that your is stick too.

If you're referring to the truck, it's a Gen-III. If you're referring to the K&N Intake systems, nope...it's a "K&N Gen-II Intake System". Don't get confused with the truck and intake systems...no relationship on the generation.
The money thing isn't a problem...I don't mind. ;)
Yes, you can build your own and they do work pretty well...but not even close to the K&N System. The free-flowing airhat and intake tube that they use is better than any factory (modified) airhat. But yes, you can save yourself some money by building one yourself. (It's personal taste and preference on that one.)

Message: You know Nick for around $60 you can make your own intake, which will perform pretty close to a $250 intake. Actually today I bought the piping I needed to do this, which is 3" ABS piping and acouple of 90`, 45` elbows and of course a K&N cone filter.
Now the money you saved on the intake it can go to a new set of headers. Now that the engine can take in more air through the intake, and let out more gases out through the headers into your already high flow cat-back. You will feel your 5.2 come to life with more power and a deep tone.
You could also get a chip, which to me I think are a waste of money because my truck is stick. I think I read some where that your truck is stick also. Chips are mostly designed for auto trannys to make them shift better.
Happy Tinkering
