Subject: Best year Gen2 ??? IP: Logged
Message: I have a pair of 91 DAKS, one 2wd and one 4wd. Love 'em! Thinking of "upgrading" to a later year and lower mileage, but want to stay with Gen2. Was 1995 or 1996 the best year for Gen2, or what else should I know before looking? Thanks!

Message: It depends on what transmission you want. The 5-speed was not available with the v-8 until 94 but in 94 or 95 the horspower went down 10 hp on the 318 so for the best factory performance gen II would be a 5.2/5-speed/3.92 LS from 94. The only mechanical change to the motors that I am aware of is that the lower powered ones use an exhasut manifold with a smaller inside diameter. The newer years would actually benifit from swapping out exhaust manifolds from a 92-94 v-8. I'm sure it easier to find a nicer, better cared for, truck in the last year of the Gen II's. Also somewhere in there they switched the feul delivery system to a 'non-return' type system, which some say makes the feul to certain cylinders spend too much time in the heat, and those cylinders lose power as a result.

Message: Thanks for those insights. Currently have 5-speed on both, with 2.5L on 2WD and V6 on the 4X4. Thinking a V6 std. cab with automatic in a 95 or 96 short bed might be about right for current needs, including Grandma as a driver.
