Subject: Starting out in second gear?? IP: Logged
Message: I see a lot about people starting out in second gear and I was wondering if that was ok to do. This is with the 3.92 ratio BTW, on the 4.7L engine. If this is ok, why can't most other vehicles start out in second ok too, I know it /can/, but the RPM is just too low on some other vehicles.
Thanks,
Mike

Message: If you have a vechile that has alot of torgue and HP compared to it's weight you can do this. The purpose for takeing off in second at higher then normal tack off rpm's are as follows: 1)If you launch in first you can spin the tires very easy 2) You would have to shift before you even make it to the first 60ft. P.S. I forgot about some older trucks and fleet trucks with a ultra low first gear often called granny gear. You seldom use the granny gear unless you are pulling heavy loads.

Message: I have tried starting in second on my dad's reccomendation, I just didn't know the reason, and it does work much better. The tyres will squeel, damn easy, that's for sure. I accedently did that at Taco Bell the other day; a person behind me wasn't watching and almost rolled into the back of me!
Thanks for the replys, appreciate it.
