Subject: 4.7 V8 5 speed...3.92 vs 3.55 IP: Logged
Message:
i am still in the drive/test mode but when i drove the 4.7 with a 5 speed and 3.92 ....first gear felt like a granny gear/semi useless. i tried starting out in second and this worked fine.
question is if i go to the 3.55 will the offsetting problem on gradual hills of having to pull it back into 4th gear all the time.
i will be ordering the 265 x 16 tires vs the 235 which was on the truck i test rode so this should help out the granny first i would think ...but dont really know
any insight here....and thanks

Message: I have the exact set-up your looking at getting (4.7 5spd 3.92 Quad Cab). I can tell you that driving it now with the stock tires and 3.92's is getting kinda old, but I am putting 33" tires on so that's why I wanted the 3.92 (which will act more like 3.55's with 33's). If you were to keep it stock, I would honestly go with a 3.55 for a 5spd, only because it is too "jerky" for me. You said you were putting larger tires on later so you might want to stick with 3.92 if they are between 31-33" (or higher). Remember, its only $35-40 as an option from the dealer, but to add it on later would be about a grand! so...

Message: I just got my 4.7l 5sp quad, yesterday. I actually like the 3.92. Yes, the first gear is kind of semiuseless. on the other hand, when you are stuck in the traffic, you don't have to shift out of 1st to prevent stalling the engine. That is sth I find good about 3.92. The acceleration alone worth $40. Definitely get it!!!

Message: I have a '00 4.7L 5spd 3.92's LS CC Slt. The 3.92's RULE! Just start out in second. Better traction is definitley a must though. 1st Gear comes in handy at the boat ramp. I just put it in first and it almost rolls on its own with very little gas.
