Anyone know the size of the OEM muffler on a 2000 Dakota with the 4.7L? Centered/offset? Local shop can weld a Dynomax universal fit on for about $80, but they need the dimensions. I can't get to the shop this week for them to measure. If I can get this info to them, they can order the part. Service desks at 2 local Dodge dealers didn't even know this one. Thanks!

Are the dimensions the same for a '97 5.2? The local shop wants $200 for a flomaster muffler and pipe....what are your comments on that? Is it reasonable?

I think they changed dimensions after 98. $200 for muffler and pipe doesn't sound too bad. I could get that for around $270 (Dynomax) on my 2000 4.7L.

Don't feel like I need a new pipe though, and I can save some cash by just welding in a new muffler. I'll probably just crawl under my truck this weekend and measure it.

I have been looking at the Flowmaster40..as well as the DynoMax turbo. Which one? Also, I don't feel that I need a new pipe...just have to get the new muffler on. So...I guess that we have decided that the size is 2.5"?

I found the Flowmaster for 59.99 and the DynoMax for 49.99

Bob -- thanks!

Had not thought about an R/T muffler. Did you notice a performance increase when you put it in?

I would not expect the Dynomax Superturbo to be very loud even at 65. The ultra-flow, I expect, would be quite a bit louder than stock.

Did you have to buy the R/T muff right from Dodge, Bob? Just curious what that would set me back compared to Flowmaster, Dnyamax, or a Gibson?

I noticed a big gain in power at higher rpms, like on the e-way when you nail it at fifty on.I here if you go to big,you loses some bottom end,and I didn't want to do that.I have no other mods at this time.It has the best dam sound,it is louder than stock, but not offensive. If I want to here something offensive I drive my Mustang[HeHe] You people know how good a 4.7 Dakota sounds...I don't even listen to the great radio & cd player,I would rather listen to the exhausts.I paid $136.50 for the muffler[52103323]and $141.75 for the tail pipe[52103262] and $9.00 for the pipe hanger[52103064]remember it is stainless,on bolt the stock and bolt on the new, peace of cake. From the back of the truck,it looks like a R/T[took of the cheap looking Dodge lettering].

Stew the R/T has a 2.50 inlet and a 2.50 out,but the tail pipe becomes a 3.00 all the way to the end of the chrome tip.I made my decision to stay with the 2.50 after reading the test in HotRod Mag. Nov. 2000...they did on a 2000 R/T,they used a Mopar after market 3.00 in and out and lost 4 HP with there High-Flow After Market Exhaust[$325.00]#P4876902.HotRod said the Dakota's healthy exhaust tone was transformed to a menacing rumble that gets plenty of attention.

Hey Bob,

Did that R/T muffler have the hangers welded to it? I'm looking to do this with my '01 Sport, but the factory muffler has hangers welded to the front of the muffler on both sides...

We had the muffler shop put on a dynomax super turbo #17698 3 inch in and out. Muffler shop was able to weld it to the 2.5 inch pipes. It is quiet until you really accelerate.

I Put a 24" Thrush Glass-pack on my 2001 4.7 M.
It's overall length was 28" so it fit well. The Thrush is 2.5" in Dia. and is made of a heavy grade steel which sounds great. It may or may not last as long as some of those $200 plus cat-back exhaust systems but it's now simple to replace (doing it myself) at $25 bucks a pack.

Well, I was going to replace the stock muffler with a Super Turbo until I got the truck up on the lift and realized how the pipes were hung. I didn't want to hang the muffler without the hangers, and really don't want to have to do any fabrication work to hang it correctly due to warranty issues with the muffler, and the possibility of the exhaust hitting the crossmember because I'm not utilizing the hangers...

This is why I would like to just replace the muffler and or the tailpipe with the one from the R/T. My truck is only 4 mos old so I don't want to get too crazy.

I looked into the glasspack too, but wasn't sure about how loud it would be at 65 mph. How loud is it?

BTW, you can get the 28" DynoMax magnum glasspack for $16.50 from Summit racing... :-)

Hey Jason,

You should check out the Mopar 3" Cat-back, it's a great system. Like Bob states in his last post "it's a menacing rumble that get's pently of attention" I have it on my 4.7, it bolts right up to the factory hangers. This exhaust is the upgrade for the R/T, it sounds mean as hell, and the power is a nice boost. BUT yet there's no droning and the interior noise is low.

Go to my site and take a look.
If you want to hear it send my an e-mail.

Guys,I have a 2003 dakota w/ a 4.7 and need a deep sounding exhaust, but not ANNOYING. I'm looking into the flowmaster super 40 very seriously. Would this be a wise choice? 2.5" in, dual outlet. Please let me know what you think and if you have advice I would appreciate it.
