I have a 2001 Dakota Club Cab 4X4 with the 4.7L auto. The transmission dipstick does not seat correctly, it stays about half an inch above the proper location, and if you push it down, it springs back up again. It seems like the dipstick is too long. We also have a 2002 Jeep Liberty (3 months older) with the same transmission and it does the same thing. The dealership has tried to bend the dipstick because they said it was no bent correctly but it still doesn’t fit. Also, this is a Canadian model truck (I don’t think that it will make a difference.)

Damn, Dodge hasn't fixed that yet!!! They've had that problem since the GenIII's were first releeased. What you need to do, is pull the dipstick out, trim about 3/8 in off the bottom of the dipstick, and stick it back in!! Will seat just fine. Did that to mine and no problems since.

My does the same thing. I don't think it's anything to worry about though, is it?

I'm not sure if I would trim the bottom of the dip stick. Assuming the the fluid level is read from the bottom of the case (where the dip stick obviously touches), trimming the stick will give you an improper tranny fluit reading.

How will trimming the dipstick give an incorrect reading?? I'm not talking about trimming the top, I'm talking about trimming the part that goes into the pan. If it is truely read off the bottom of the pan, trimmin the dipstick won't give any false reading because it will still stick into the pan the same distance, just won't bottom out anymore.

That conversation makes me think about the old cabinet maker rib, "I cut that off three times and it is still too short" That sure seems strange that obviously Dodge knows about it and hasn't fixed it.

Definitey trim it, if it sticks up high enough that it doesn't seal, water can get in when you drive thru deep puddles, or if you wash it and the seal across the firewall is defective. I bought a car cheap once that got water in the tranny that way. You could actually see water vapor coming out of the dipstick tube as it warmed up. I put a used tranny in it and drove it for years.
