I'm thinking of buying a Dakota, the Quad Cab, and was wondering about pros and cons of the rig. I've owned several Toys, but I think Toyota has lost something along the way.
I understand every rig has it's pluses and minuses, I own an 82' CJ8. Anyways, any info would be great.
I'm thinking of the 4.7 with a stick since I don't plan on any big towing, but I can be swayed to the bigger engine.
Tranny issues, both auto and stick. Transfer case issues? The full-time vs. part-time case? General engine performance and maintnence?

Thanks
Zeke

Well I order mine tonight after work, The only thing I can say negative on the QC is the cab really doesn't look proportioned to the bed and of corse the beds a lot smaller, (No offense to those who own one Hawkeye, Blizzard, and any others just a personal opinion) but if you need four doors and the room it's all you, I'd say if you get a QC get the 5.9L I wish I can with a club cab 4x4 but I can only get a 4.7L at least it's a V8, there's so many mods available out there for the 5.9L the 4.7L is only working into it's 3rd year I'd spend the money and get an automatic it really helps with re-sale, this is just my opinion

No offense taken, Clevite! ;o)
I love my quad cab ... it's true you do lose bedspace with the 4 door cab, but in my case, a 2 year old in a car seat just wasn't gonna cut it in a club cab. The extra space in the back seat has come in handy on lots of occasions. I can still fit the quad in the back ... tailgate down, but it fits!
4.7 or 5.9 ... either will work. If you're not planning on towing the 4.7 will do. The extra gas mileage with the 4.7 is a nice touch.
Full time vs part time 4x4 --- that's pretty much your call. I opted for part time cuz I only "need" 4x4 a couple months of the year.

I think the Dakota is a solid truck. Never owned a Toyota so can't compare. Mine's had a few brutal trips to the sand dunes and hasn't missed a beat yet. You'll be happy whatever route you decide to go!

2001 QC 4x4 4.7 A/Trans SLT PlUS Towing Package, Heavy Duty Service Group Wheel Package etc......... It rocks! I realy like mine. I am the first to buy American since my Dad totaled his 1970 Dart Swinger. I would not hesitate to tow with it! I wish I had gotten the manual trans instead of the automatic. It has a great ride. It accelerates great. If you are a die hard 4x4 fan look else wear. The Dakota lacks ground clearance and articulation. It has a decent interior and plenty of space. It is alot cheaper then a Durango. I have questions about it's long term durability but we will see what we see. If you want a Dodge get a Dodge if you want a Toyota get a Toyota. Drive them both talk priceing and get the one that makes you happy. The Tundra is technicly a full size but they are priced alot like a Dakota and have the same size engine.

Make sure you get the limited slip and the 3.92 gear,it'll add about $300 to the price but if you try to add this stuff later it'll cost around $2000 parts and labor(aftermarket parts)
Believe me! I went the expensive route!

Yeah definitley get the 3.92's and LS. I've put almost 30k miles on my 2000 4.7L Dak and haven't had any problems. I have a 4x2 and can pull 20ft boats no problem. But I also live in Florida. No hills and harsh conditions here other than humidity.

Only one problem I can find so far. Who was the bright guy who designed the bed 1" shy of a 4' sheet of ply or drywall. Ya couldn't sqeeeeze one more dang inch outa the thing?

Denis - Funny....the Toyota bed is even smaller.

I planned on getting the 3.92 gears and LS. While I have installed both of these before in my Jeep, I agree, it is much eaiser to have them do it, and a lot cheaper.

I also planned on getting the Heavy Duty service group and Tow package as well......why take chances I say. Go big, or go home! ;)>

Thanks all for the input!

I am also considering a quad cab dakota 4x4. It almost sounds like that the 5.9 does not really add any more towing capacity from the previous posts listed on this topic?

I wouldn't have the 5.9. Gas hog. I can't imagine needing that kinda motor in a midsize (other then the track of course). My 4.7 has 230 plus hp with just a K&N system and the IAT adjuster (under $200). It has more snot then my 99' Silverado did. Get's far better gas milage too boot. It's plenty to pull my trailers and tractors. The brakes aren't near as good though, but again...midsize...not full size...other may see it differently.

Hey Rob Bubala I see what cha mean by the 5.9 doesn't have too much more towing compacity but really it does, the 5.9L has about 14% more torque and something else to keep in mind, the 5.9L's torque is at lower RPM, I don't mean to start a battle match just my 2 pennies

No battle here. Everyone is intitled to his opinion. I guess it really comes down to what is it's 90% of use. 90% commuter? 10% towing? If yes, maybe 4.7 is better then. If 10%/90% on the other hand, then maybe 5.9...err...maybe full size at that rate, but ya know what I mean.
