Subject: OIL OVERFILL? IP: Logged
Message: Can anyone tell me what too much oil would do to an engine because I think dodge over filled it with a QUART too much from what the dip stick is tellin me. And my engine blew a week ago and I just wanted to know if this could have done anything

Message: I really don't know if 1 qt too much would cause the engine to blow. Overfilling causes the main oil seals to burst from the pressure. My mom's 87 Olds did this when Wal-Mart didn't drain out the old oil before putting in 5qts of new.

Message: well, if it did blow the seals, (which it definitely will do), then it pukes out the rest of the oil, this will certainly destroy an engine.
Please keep us up to date as to what happens with your situation.

Message: The crank and other moving parts may splash the oil violently enough in the windage tray to cause foaming. The foaming can cause the oil pump to cavitate, causing it to fail. The foamed oil when pumped to the rest of the engine contains so much air that it does not properly lubricate the engine, causing bearing damage.
This is why the owners manual states that the engine should never be overfilled. Check the manual and see if it actually states that engine damage may occur... Most vehicle manuals so state.
Good luck... They may deny the overfilling and say you could have put the excessive oil in the crankcase.

Message: Good question, can anyone tell me what the oil capacity is for the 3.9L? On my first oil change I took it to a quick lube shop and they put 5 quarts in. I looked in the manual and it says 4 quarts including a filter change. I went back and had them adjust the level, even though they assured me that the manuf. calls for 5 quarts. Two days ago I went to the dealer and had the oil changed. Guess what, 5 quarts again. Is it possible that the manual and dipstick is wrong? I would expect that the five star could properly change the oil. So what is the capacity, 4 quarts or 5?
Thanks
Shawn

Message: Check your manual it will say how much to put in. Ironically the 3.9 takes less oil (including filter) than the inline 4 or the v8 does. I understand that the 3.9 takes 4 1/2 quarts with filter.

Message: For what it's worth, I just called the two Dodge dealers in town (service). One said they put in 5 to 5 1/2 quarts. Other said whatever the manual says. I said I don't have a manual. He had me wait and came back and said his manual said 4 quarts.

This is for the AmsoilSponsor and anyone else. I get my order of Amsoil delivered. My 2002 Dodge 1500 4.7L calls for 6 Quarts. I drain the oil then changed the filter letting it drain the same way. New filter .... poor 6 quarts in .... and what do I behold .... I am almost 3/4 of a quart TOO full. Anyone else find Amsoil overfilling there bottles. I should have checked the bottle levels I know. Any ideas?

BA2002,
Seems strange that each bottle would have an extra 1/8 quart. However, I have noticed that Amsoil bottles are consistently filled between the one quart mark and the one liter mark - but I don't think that would add up to 1/8 of a quart extra per bottle - maybe a couple of ounces - where is my darn conversion chart.
So - it is possible that you could have been 6-8 ounces high on the refill - of course you probably end up leaving 1/2 ounce in the bottles, unless you let them drain a long time.

Message: I would rather have the bottles slightly overfilled than underfilled. Mobil1 must have had the same situation last summer. I was always overfilling according to the dipstick, but according to the bottles I was right on target.
P.S. I have since switched to Amsoil. I'll go check my supply and see if they are slightly overfilled.
