Message: SAVE YOUR MONEY!
Our plastic headlights are engineered to work
only with 9007-spec lamps. HID lamps
produce different light patterns which require
bulb positioning not engineered into our (Gen
III) headlights.
Furthermore, the light temperature is too blue
to be very effective in fog, rain, snow, etc.
Remember, the HID headlights you see in
Mercedes, Lexus, etc. are engineered
systems, designed to work together; the beam
patterns are totally different than those
pathetic DOT-codes we are stuck with. They
employ totally different reflectors and lenses to
work - that is not available for our Daks.
Sylvania do not yet offer their HID headlights
for our Daks, they only have the auxilliary
lights.
Just changing to HID bulbs is a mistake - we
really need complete systems (bulbs, lenses,
reflectors) that are designed to work together.
Bright news: you can get 9007 Xenon/Halogen
lamps - Sylvania XtraVision, NAPA Brite Lite
(cheaper) are two I have easily found. I just got
a pair of the NAPAs tonight and will install
them tomorrow at work (dry garage). These
bulbs are genuinely brighter without that
embarrassing "blue light special" effect.

Message: i bought a set of xenon lights from midnight moose and i really like them. they put off a blueish color that makes it alot easier to see than the stock lights. they appear to be brighter also. they also have the foglights. they cost right at $15 for the driving lights and the same for the fog lights. i tried a set of some type from walmart before these and they suck, don't get them

Message: I have to agree with what Daddy-D said...
The "HID-like" bulbs (like the Eaglite Xenons or APC Super White Xenons...and I've tried both) do provide good illumination during clear weather, but they suck during inclement weather (both snow & rain). IMO, the best thing you can do is look for a set of clear-glass bulbs like the Sylvania's, Napa's, etc.

Message: Either the 9007/HO bulbs, Sylvania Silver-Star, or PIAA Super-White. I've run all of those and am totally sold on the PIAA bulbs (expensive though). The 9007/HO bulbs can be found at WalMart for about $20.

Message: Light temperature is in reference to the wave spectrum. Blue is after white and the HID lights are about as close to sunlight as you can buy. Imagine an arc welder or an arc spot like they put out for grand openings, it's so bright it looks kind of bluish. I have a set of PIAA driving/foglights all in one housing and the brights are bluish while the fog lights are amber. They use an ionization process to attach molocules to the bulb it's self so it shines amber. This gives it a much longer throw because the other colors in the spectrum aren't being blocked out at the reflector.

Message: I think the original question was about real HID lights, not just a regular bulb with a blue tunt to give the look. I can't "see" how it would be worth $700 or more unless you are just made of money, but then maybe you should be driving one of those new Caddy teucks with them as an option.

KP97DAK is obviously a victim of the "blue bulb" advertising their HID-like ability. He even stated that the bulbs he was looking at were only $20-$30. No true HID conversion kit that I've seen comes in for less than $400. Hell, even Midnight Moose's 9007 HID conversion kit clocks in at $425.

Message: What is worse is that those "HID-like" bulbs do NOT put out more light. They can't ... PERIOD. They have the same power rating yet use a FILTER to create that blue tint. That means LESS light.
The reason it SEEMS like they put out more light is because they are different than everyone elses. you have 3 other cars near you all with the same OEM lights. Then you have yours which is a different color. Of course you are going to notice when your lights start reflecting off things ... it is DIFFERENT. But it still is NOt brighter.
Also blue is in fact a WORSE color for you to see with. Blue is harder to focus on and your eyes are slightly less sensative to blue light. Technically green is the color we are most sensative to. Remember the aborted attempts with green fire trucks? The reason it didn't work though: people ignore green as a "attention" color because we are trained that red is bad, danger, warning, etc.
Here is a simple way to prove the focusing thing to yourself. Drive down the road at night along the "mall strip" and look at signs as far away as you can. find red ones and blue ones. See which ones, of similar size and background contract, you can see each. You will quickly see that blue is harder to focus clearly.
Sorry but fake HID bulbs do nothing but reduce total light output and are actually worse for your visual accuity. Real HIDs really do put out more light and don't filter out the easier to focus wave lengths.
HOWEVER, it IS possible to make a HID conversion kit for most any 9007 bulb but it must be done right. And there are a lot of wrong kits out there. But it doesn't all HAVE to be designed as a package, but the convsersion kit must be designed to work with your reflector of course. www.hidtech.com is a great resource for no joke information.

Message: i tried Sylvania SILVERSTAR HIGH PERFORMANCE HALOGEN bulbs in my wife's Concord, Subsequent to doing that I changed the Dakota and Caravan to them, They are only about 100 degrees kelvin from a full Xenarc standard HID system, which is are fully street legal (according to the back of the package) and go for about 37 bucks a set at your local Wall-Mart. The think that $37 is a lot better then $700 for almost the same thing. Standard halogen is 3200K, cool blue is 3500K, and SLIVERSTAR's are 4000K, standard HID is 4100K. The Kelvin temp ratings are a way to determine both the heat rating as what a heat seaking system would see and as a brightness factor as what a photographer uses. The higher the Kelvin rating, the brighter and whiter the light is. I am getting to the age that my night vision is starting to fade a bit and find these things more then brings back any night vision that I have lost, and I can see farther down the road at night then I ever have. The work rather well in rainy and snowy weather too.

Message: I agree totally with what slopehead says. I'm 54 years young, and I need the extra light output at night. The SilverStars put out at least 20% more light than standard halogens, and the whiter, brighter light is just what I need. Even the MOPAR Performance web site recommends them.
