Subject: Metal or Fiberglass? IP: Logged
Message: Steel or fiberglass, which is better? I am looking at a hood that happens to be manufactured by "Good Hood" GHD201. I believe that it is fiberglass. Anyone know if the same hood is available in Steel? Any ideas where I can get the best prices? Thanks

Message: As for which material is better for hoods, steel or fiberglass, I would have to say steel. Steel hoods are usually direct bolt-on, have no danger of warping over time and are more care free. Fiberglass hoods generally require much more prepping prior to painting, usually require a lot of fitting and have a good chance of warping over time. The weight difference is nominal.
If they offered the hood I have in steel, I would've chosen that one over fiberglass. I am still happy with my hood, but I do notice some waves in the fiberglass. This is after the body shop spent the better part of the day blocksanding & prepping ... along with another partial day of fitting.

Message: I don't know about all fiberglass hoods, but I can tell you that the Cervini's ram-air fiberglass hood that I have on my F150 fits as good as the factory hood did. There were no problems getting it to fit right. I can't tell you how much more difficult it was to paint cuz I had a guy do it for me. It's been on the truck for about 4 years now and (living in Michigan) it's seen it's share of hot & cold spells. So far I haven't noticed any warping of any kind. Cervini's does make two style hoods for the Dakota. Check out www.cervinis.com for more info.
