Message: I changed my oil filter this weekend, and I gotta tell you that the 2-liter bottle tip that someone posted a while ago really eliminates the oil mess associated with changing the oil filter. No mess at all!! By the way, I changed over to Mobil 1 10-30 and with Mobil 1 filter. Thanks again.

I use the 2 liter plastic soda bottle and it works great. Leave cap on an empty 2 liter plastic soda bottle and then with say a razor cut about 3 inches off the bottom of the bottle. Use your filter wrench and loosen up the oil filter and then slip the open end of the soda bottle up through the access whole and onto/over the oil filter. Squeeze the soda bottle and turn until the filter is loose and falls into the bottle. Lower the soda container with the filter down and out of the access whole. Can tell you filter is pretty hot so I use a pair of latex gloves on my working hand to insulate from the heat.

Message: Great tip. I used an 8" funnel with the hole plugged and reached around to unscrew the filter, but the water bottle sounds even cleaner.

Message: I must be a complete idiot, because I tried the two-liter bottle thing and still got oil all over the place.
Only I could screw up something so simple :-)

Message: Glad the tip came in useful! As I mentioned in my earlier post here also consider the Fumoto oil drain valve which replaces your oil pan plug for quick/easy/clean oil changes.

Message: Yeah, I just used the bottle trick this weekend when I was changing the oil on my wife's Explorer. Worked like a champ. Didn't spill a drop of oil! Usually it's a disgusting mess changing her filter. It isn't time for the change on my Dakota yet, but I'm pretty sure the bottle trick will save me a lot of mess there too.

Message: Screw that. I say getting oil all over the place is half the fun. I just changed the oil in my fiance's Daytona yesterday. I threw on some gloves, unscrewed everything, got burning hot oil all over my gloves, my arms, my pants, my overshirt, my undershirt, my socket, my ratchet, the oil pan, and a little on the driveway. I think that's what makes it fun.

Message: I just pay the dealer $19.95 with no oil spilled in my garage or on me and every 4 oil changes I get a free one. I love my 5-star dealer! I save my garage time for fun things like mods:)

Message: I don't know about that fumotovalve, sounds like something else to go wrong. If all you have to do is move the lever a bit to drain the oil what's to say when your off roading you don't bump it against something like a stick on the ground, I'd rather be safe than sorry
that's my $.02

Message: You would have to see / examine a Fumoto Oil Drain Valve. It's not this little, flimsy lever that you seem to think. Actually the valve is quite impressive / well designed / well made.
My thought is a vehicle owner would more likely strip the thread, etc. on a drain plug then something ever going wrong with this well made valve. Again you would have to see the valve as well as read the use reports from MANY, MANY that have used the valve over the last few years.
Note:The Drain Valve for passenger cars and light trucks is approximately 7/8" thick. This means that the valve sticks out only 1/2" more than the regular plug head from the oil pan. The Nipple on the N-Type Valve extends from the valve for 5/8". Thre manufacturer does not recommend using the N-Type valve for vehicles with low clearance, as the valve may stick out too far against the ground on a vehicle with minimal ground clearance.
Well enough said...... an no I do not have stock in the Fumoto company.. Bill in NY

Message: That little lever looks sooo flimsy. My luck, I would rip it off on a rock somewhere in Arizona's backcountry. Plus if I had that I wouldn't get oil on my hands, arms, tools and driveway :)

Don't you know it feels better in the raw?
I did try the 2-liter bottle thing but the filter got so slippery I couldn't unscrew it the whole way...
