Message: I have 97 Dakota with black front bumper. After one year I noticed 2 small bubbles in the bumper. A year later I noticed about 10 more. Just yesterday I sanded 21 spots where the paint had bubbled and rust was forming. I then repainted it. Glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem. I have no rock chips anywhere on my Dakota, I drive a short distance to and from work and hardly ever on the highway. I firmly believe there was a defect when they painted these. The bumber was rusting from the inside out, not because of rocks or pebbles.

Message: I had a 97 Dodge Stratus that had paint problems on the front and rear bumper cap. Took it in to the factory for warranty repair and the service lady said it had been wrecked (it hadn't), I had one of the paint guys come look at it, he said the factory did not add enough "flex" stuff (sorry, don't remember the chemical) so they repainted it under warranty (but got overspray on the fender).
Ford has the best factory paint.

Message: What I did was buy a grinding disc to put on my drill, grind all the spots off, and repaint. So far it still looks good after 6 months. The very bottom of the bumper is hard to grind and is starting to bubble a litte. There is nothing you can do short of buying a new chrome bumper. I assume if you bought a new black one it would just rust again, unless they changed the paint or metal.

Message: I have a 97 dak when I bought it about a year ago uded and now my frount bumper is bubbing and pealing. I figgered it was due to old age so I never went to the dealer with it. So there must be something in the paint or primer I guess.

Message: I have a 1997 Dakota and the paint began to bubble on my bumper within the first year I owned it. The first dealer told me it was rocks from the road (special rocks that only affect bumpers I guess). The second dealer said the warranty only covered rust perforations.
It is now 4 years later and my bumper looks HORRIBLE and makes my truck look like trash. I contacted the Dodge customer service recently and they opened a file. The dealer called me back today and said the district manager reviewed it and they will not repair it (they did not even look at my truck). Needless to say I am somewhat upset that Dodge is giving me this type of runaround on a $25K truck.
Has anyone sucessfully had their bumper replaced (mine is far beyond sanding/grinding to repaint). Has anyone gone through the arbitration process for this problem? Please e-mail with any info that may be useful. Perhaps if enough people come forward with this problem Dodge will not ignore it? Here are some pics just to show how bad it is:

I have a '98 Sport and my bumper looks like crap. My buddy does body work and he repainted it for me, even used some clear-coat on it. Within a year it was rusting again! This is ridiculous.

Message: I have a 2000 Dakota and the front bumper (black) looks like crap as well. It has app. 20-30 chips on it, and there is only 1 chip on each fender, and none on the hood. The bumper does take more of a beating since it is a flat panel directly in the front, but the way it chips is ridiculous. It actually had two chips on it when I bought it. I special ordered the truck (took 17 weeks), and when I get it has a chipped bumper. The dealer I bought it from is crap. The service dept. sucks, and someone had been driving the truck (for 18 miles) before I was even informed of it being delivered. They actually never called, I went and seen the truck on the lot, and found out it was mine. The chips came from some fool mowing grass against the front of it. It had cut grass all over the front. Anyhow, my bumper is chipped very badly, as well.

Message: Troy, my bumper did not get rusty because of
chips. It rusted from underneath the paint . I
have many spots that are bubbling with rust
that are in spots that would be unlikely to be
caused by rocks.
If there are enough people I would be willing
to write a letter to Chrysler on everyone's
behalf. I also have some contacts in local
television that would probably love to run a
story like this - it could also be shared
amongst the network nationally.
Can anyone post a link to this thread on the
appropriate newsgroups? If you would like to
add your name to my "Rusty Dakota Bumper"
list, please e-mail me your name and state.
This way I can keep track of everyone.
Have a great holiday everyone!

Message: I'm glad I'm not the only fool out there that bought a Dakota. My '98 is the biggest piece of !@#$ that I've ever owned. My from bumper was black when I bought it new. After the first year I noticed very small holes coming through the paint. Before long I had huge rust spots all over the front bumper. It looks like crap! My bumpers are the least of my problems. I had a computer problem at 20k, which was fixed under the warrenty. I Replaced the lower ball joints, and shocks a 50k. Front diff. leak, tranny leak, tranny cooled leak. And I just figured out were I was loosing a qt. of oil every 1000 miles, my rear seal is leaking. Can't wait to see that repair bill!

I just got my front bumper painted a couple of weeks ago. It has been faded and grey since I bought it, with rust spots. I actually got it done at the local Nissan dealership, which has an award winning body shop. They took the bumper off, sanded, took out a couple of dings, and painted it for $200. They did a great job.
