Message: I FINALLY got the dealership to pay for repainting my bumper, roof, hood, door tops & fenders due to the obnoxious 'freckles' (peeling?) on the bumper & 'fade out' of the rest. (Got it back today - 4/29/02) It took quiet a few trips & more than one argument tho. Anybody who has even one DAY of warranty left should push it. If you don't, but can prove 'pre-existing problem', go for it! The 'repair' cost Dodge $1053 - me NOTHING. Don't give up, don't walk away. Emails, letters, pics, conversations where you have a witness will all improve your cases. Will give more detail on that if anyone needs it. cj

Message: They do have an additional warranty for body parts of your vehicle rusting...not sure how long it covers your vehicle but I think it is 6 years. Consult a dealer.

Message: Has anyone had their bumpers powder coated instead? Damn near every motorcycle I see with custom coloured rims are powdercoated to protect from stone chips.
For anyone who's about to take their truck in about a rusty bumper, go visit a few auto paint shops first & get quotes on paper saying it was a bad paint job / poor quality steel / whatever. At least two shops of reputable status. And bring a large magnifiying glass. I'm serious! Look for the hole that the 'magic stone' put in the paint to allow the rust to start. If there's no hole, then the rust started from the inside, right?

Message: I also have a 1997 Dakota with a black painted bumper. It kept rusting because the factory never put primer on and the paint would not stick. It was fixed under warranty three times and they still did not put primer on it even when I offered to pay for the extra expense.
After the warranty ran out, I took the bumper off and brought it to a body shop. They sand blasted the whole thing, put several coats of a good primer on it, then painted it black. So far it's been has seen 2 NY winters with the new paint job... so far so good!

Message: Mine was the same, painted three times by Dodge! No Primer and cheap paint from a can. My wife had a fender bender this past winter and dented the bumper. I bought a new after market bumper, It looked very similar to original finish. I took it to a company called Line-X for $80 cdn they coated it for me and painted it black. (Line-X does spray on bed liners) I got them to spray as much as they could inside as well as my old bumper was rusted to Fu!# inside as well. The coating is textured a bit but looks really cool, the paint is not really necessary but it makes it shiny and easier to clean the Bug Shi# off.
