Subject: I am starting to hate this truck! IP: Logged
Message: On the way home, my 93 Dakota with 318 and auto decided to shut off while I was driving it. I quickly popped it into neutral and I guess I had my foot pressed down on the gas because it started right up and reved to red line. Just then I notice all the cars backed up behing me that were surprised since it happened just as I went around a corner. So I drop it into drive when it hadnt setteled down to idle and barked the tires. I noticed a day or two ago, it has been idling a bit low(5000-6000 instead of 7000). What is going on here?

Message: Yeah, I know what you mean. I had a truck that idled at 7000 at a stop light, and when my dog barked I dropped in drive and took off. When I hit about 8,000 Rpm I thought, HEY, WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE! It was reving around the dial, must if went arond 2 or 3 times, I must was going around 190 MPH and then I hit the nitros, WHAT HONEY, NO I'm not on the internet, I'll be up in a minute. I'll touch base with you crazy guys tommorow.

Message: Ordinarily, I would get a good chuckle out of that kind of response but not right now. If you cant post a serious response to a serious question, dont post anything at all. I am not it too great of a mood right now so lets save the smart a$$ replies for tommorow.

Message: Could try cleaning the throttle body and resetting the computer to see if it helps the idle any. If you did engine damage you would know it.

Message: Andrew,
To my best recollection, 318's have always been sensitive to moisture in the plug wires and rotor cap. Total electrical cut-outs can be common with increased moisture in the air. Was it raining when you had your problem? You might try replacing the wires and rotor cap OR spraying your wires with silicone (the cheap fix!)

Message: That is something I didnt think about before greybeard. When it cuts out, the radio keeps going and it is never raing out. What other options are there?

Message: Check fuel pump pressure. My neighbor spent a lot of money chasing that kind of problem, even replaced the fuel pump. Turned out to be a vewry short piece of fuel line between fuel pump and the acutal exit from the tank. It had a split in it allowing gas to dump back into the tank which lowered the outlet pressure.

Message: Check the Idle solenoid, remove it and clean it but DO NOT TWIST/TURN it. If it's dirty, it will not seat right.
Also a good tune up and injector cleaner would be good for it too. I noticed a difference with STP $3.99 stuff after not using any for 8000 miles.
Good Luck

Message: Andrew,
Keep in mind your ignition circuit is separate from your your lights, radio, etc. I'd still replace the rotor cap and wires if they're more than 3 years old. Another sign is if it's hard to start on a humid/rainy day. Of course it could very well be a dirty fuel filter also which might tend to behave more sporatically.

Message: I think its a relatively "simple" fix. I'd try the different sensors. First off, check the speed sensor, which determines what gear the truck will be in based upon the information it recieves from the speedometer. Then, look at the throttle position sensor, which measures your gas pedal's command. I'm sure its gonna be a sensor, and not something super dramatic and costly. You can perform a self diagnostic test on your truck using the CHECK ENGINE light. That's the F-I-R-S-T thing I'd do....
