Subject: Popped out of Gear? IP: Logged
Message: Wondering if someone can help me here. I was parking my 97 dakota last night and when I moved the shift lever out of drive, it gave way and now moves freely on the steering column. What the Crap happened there. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary that I haven't done a zillion other times when parking it. Now its stuck in neutral i think and you can't take the key outo of the ignition, and it won't catch any gears. Help please

Message: That's definately a new one. Couple of places I would check.... On the floorboard where the steering column goes into the firewall, there might be a 'safety switch' there. I know older vehicles have it. It's about 1.5" x 3" (guess) mounted on the top of the column. That might be broke. The next place would be the linkage under the body where it connects to the tranny. Just a couple of thoughts. I know others on here will give better answers than me.
If it is in neutral, then you should be able to take the key out and lock the steering column (same as park)(you can also start the vehicle). So it might be in gear, the vehicle can still roll with it in gear and the engine off. Park is the only gear that it won't roll in (unless the pin is broke).
