Subject: Air Bag Locks IP: Logged
Message: How effective are Dealer sold air bag locks? My Dak is being ordered and will be the first car I've had with an air bag and dont know how often they get stolen and if a 'lock' will actually prevent them from being taken. Does anyone use them and would you recommend that I also intall the locks? Thanks.

Message: I think that you are talking about being able to turn the air bag off if you have a undersized passenger.

Message: Yeah they are not locks on them, as there is no market for stolen airbags. They just lock or prevent them from going off in a colision, as small children can be injured by their deployment. Kind of wish I had them, so that my 9 year old sister would be safe in an accident.

Message: I'm glad Dodge gave me the option to shut the passenger side airbag off. My wife rarely rides with me in my truck and when she doesn't I keep the airbag off. The damage done to the windshield from the plastic cover is very substantial. If I hit something going a low speed, I don't want to replace my windshield.

Message: Actually what I think Greg is talking about is the the replacement of the nuts that hold the airbag assembly in the steering wheel and the passenger side they replace the nuts with nuts with a simular type nut that is used for wheel locks.Special tool to remove them.I think that it is really not necessary to get them unless in your area they have had a history of having air bags stolen.Use that money and get a spare tire lock it is easier to steal spare than airbag.

Message: No, I've seen what he's talking about. They are little funky headed screws that they use to install the airbag so they can't be removed using standard tools. I don't know anyone who has used them, or for that matter, don't know anyone who has had their airbags stolen. Unless you live in a high crime area I guess I wouldn't worry about it. My .02 worth anyway!

Message: Sorry my original post wasnt as clear as it should have been. The later replys are correct. My concern deals with air bag theft, not child safety issues. I noticed (on the www.4adakota.com) Dak page that after market air bag anti theft locks were available ,... similiar looking to the special lug nuts on wheels to prevent theft. I was just trying to determin how likely air bag theft is now adays...
