Subject: TBS...Power or Junk IP: Logged
Message: Hey I put on a TBS on my 2001 5.9 along w/ my new intake and people are tellin me the TBS are junk don't bother w/ em, but they don't give me any proof that they don't work. I mean have U done any tests or seen any charts someone has done from the track? Just because some dude says ohhh these are junk don't get em don't necesarily mean they don't work. I drove my new truck around for awhile right out of the dealership. Then drove it around w/ the new intake on it awhile and noticed the increase in HP. Then last weekend I added the TBS and could tell even more power added when I punch it at a light. I heard of a guy returning the TBS just cuz it whistled everytime he drove it and he thought it was stupid and didn't work...thats not proof that it don't work just someones opinion. If you know for a fact they don't work and have tested it tell me where I can go that shows a chart that they don't help any so I can solve this once and for all.
Thanks -Mike-

Message: Placebo effect.
You spent money on it already and you're convinced that it works..... what else matters?
If you want to spend more money on it just to prove the point.... then go spend $75 or $100 for some dyno time. Of course that will only lead to depression. You'll find out that you spent money to prove that the initial money spent was of no value. That will mean that the TBS actually cost $75 or $100 more than originally thought.
Bottom line is that if you THINK it goes better with it on.... then leave it on!
If you want to know for sure then go spend the money for the dyno.
If you are hoping to find somebody else that's bought one and spent the money to prove that it works? Good luck.
If you just want to argue about it's merits? Then you came to the right place.... the internet is very good for that sort of thing! There's hundreds of thousands of people that just love to argue!

Message: Ok well on the box it says up to 14 HP...now I know it never gives what it says...but the dude from the company says it puts out NO HP and no added power?!? Can't I ask for my money back for false claims?

Message: go to speedtweaks.net. they did a before and after dyno on one and it did not help our engines at all( the 5.9 anyways). it is under the tips and tricks section.

Message: I have asked this before, but have never really had a direct answer. Does a throttle body spacer do anything for carburated engines? Usually I just get, "no, it's crap!" I would think that it would create a better air/fuel mixture by swirling it together, but nobody addresses that in their response. Thanks!
PS, I think it's cognitive dissonance, not the placebo effect!

Message: Cognitive Dissonance. Is that what happens to me when my wife starts talking while my races are on the tube? hehehe
A throttle body spacer might work ok with a carburetor..... if the carburetor wasn't functioning properly. My theory is that it would actually disrupt the flow characteristics of the intake manifold design at WOT. At lower rpms and with the carb at less than WOT, the air probably isn't moving quickly enough for the spacer to have much effect anyway. It might be useful as a basic spacer, which would be due to the additional volume of the plenum because of the spacer. I could be totally wrong, but I don't really see it helping much either way.
If memory serves me right: Smokey Yunick used to use a turbo to help mix and actually heat the incoming air/fuel charge in his hot air engines. My understanding was that it was more of an exercise for increasing fuel mileage than anything else.

Message: Well what I think is that most people think that the spacer is gonna add extra HP at the line or when they stomp on the gas. I think that it works in mid throttle when your driving normally and gradually accelerate...thats when the HP is gained not when the throttle is to the max. Most of the dyno tests probably come from pushing the thing to the max and doing that decreases the MPG and the HP gain. Least thats what the maker of the thing told me.

Message: What NeedForSpeed is sayin makes sense because I'm one of the ones who took the dive on one but The "Supercharger-Like" whistling that the spacer makes is strongest about mid-throttle. And it may just be physiological since I spent the time and money but I noticed a little better throttle response in the mid-range. I'm not sure (See Duner's disclaimer)

Message: It probably works well with the M1 Intake manifold on a 5.2 or 5.9. The "beer keg" defeats the purpose of the TBS, the air can't swirl into a larger plenum and then swirl into the cylinders. On an M1 it seperates early so the swirl may actually work. My thoughts
