Subject: oil leaking from valve covers? IP: Logged
Message: I purchased a winter vehicle, and havent driven my V6 Dak for about 2 weeks (longest time I havent driven it for 5 years).
Well, I went to check the fluids, and lo and behold - the valve covers were leaking! Prior to 2 weeks ago, no leaking. Is this common? How easy are those gaskets to fix?

Message: The gastkets are just like any other gaskets... Take off your valve covers and scrape off the old gasket material making sure you don't gouge the surface. Then put the gasket on will some gasket sealer and put em back on. While you have em off you might as well clkean the covers and inspect your rockers and such... Just to make sure everything looks ok. =)

Message: No,
Always use new gaskets. Most don't need any sealant. Just a little to hold the gasket in place.

Message: I had some work done on my truck. They gave me a list of things they checked while they had it.
One is the Heater core hose leaking, Drive Belt cracking & Valve covers leaking (then go from there).
Is there a way to insure they don't falsely charge me for unnecessary work? Such as after taking off the valve covers, what else could be wrong if anything?
