Subject: Rust what?! IP: Logged
Message: Just got my first Dakota =D 2001 4.7l V8 Dakota Sport+! God I love it ^_^ But back to the subject. I was hammered with 2 options and woundering if they are any good. One was Mopar's rust proofing, the MasterSheild thing... one the Dodge dealer sells. Is it any good? At $990 bucks, I dont know. Any other brands better or just as good? They also asked me if I wanted their spray-in bed liner. Was called Bullet Proof and that was at $500. Again, any other products just as good or better?
THanks

Message: $500 for a bed liner? Uh, I got mine at Ziebart, it has a lifetime warrenty, and is hard as heck to mess up. Plus, stuff that's put in there doesn't slide around. I don't think I paid anywhere near $500... I want to say it was like $300, but I can't remember.
Rust proofing I don't know about, all new vehicals are rust proofed at the factory. Some sort of plating? Again, don't remember, want to say Zinc...
Unless you live where they put salt on the roads in winter, probally don't need it. Heck, I live where they do, and I don't need it... personal preferance.

Message: I paid $80 for a pair of stall mats to place in my bed to keep stuff from sliding around. Let me tell you, these things are tough (and help out on the traction front)

Message: Rustproofing -- I would say that undercoating your vehicle would be well worth it. I rustproof vehicles where I work (I think they charge $500) -- but that comes with some other stuff.
Spraying rustproofing in the doors and in the engine seems pointless to me. So if you do get it done, just tell them you want it undercoated, fabric proctection, and paint sealed.
I undercoated my 01 Dakota, used the teflon paint sealant, and sprayed fabric protection on the seats. There have been cases, however, of people who got clear rustproofing on the power-window motors in their doors and the warranty wouldn't cover them because of the rustproofing.

Message: I garage my baby half the year. 1997 dakota going on fours with no rust.
Rust-proofing is just a marketing ploy for extra money. Then again if you keep your truck for 50+ years it might be worth it.

Message: Rustproofing is a MAJOR profit center for a car dealer. What happens if there is dirt and moisture on the car before the rustproofing is applied? Also the most important time to apply any protection is at the stamping plant. I would not waste the money.

Message: Speaking of rust...I just bought an R/T and put some duals on it w/ long 3-1/2" tips and they are starting to turn a rust color on the inside...is that normal?
