Message: I have been reading these forums looking for tips to improve my Dodge's performance MPG and HP. I bought a 2001 RAM 1500 5.2 Quad cab. It has lots of room inside it is a great looking truck. It is slow to respond to the gas for power but drinks it like a wineo and cheep wine. 7-8 mpg city. It handles lose and sloppy.I just traded it with 1027. miles on it for the chevy. The chevy rocks the dodge. Just as big inside. Feels more solid (My wifes observations from the left seat)Way more power better, handeling, and way better mpg. Its not quite as pretty its close though. It realy depends on what you want though. The price diffrence is worth it. If you want drivability and speed without tinkering.
I am not trying to piss any one off. It is just my observations.

Message: I've had my '01 Dakota QC for one week now and can offer some initial impressions compared to my '99 Silverado I just traded. Keep in mind this is full size vs. mid size. The 5.3 in the Chevy is a great motor. Mine was noisy but never missed a beat. Floor it from a stop or a roll and it goes. It likes the upper RPM's more than the Dodge but the 4.7 seems pretty nice as well. Has similar power to the Chevy in the low RPM's but not as strong when the tranny kicks down (although more subtle when downshifting while going up a hill). The automatic tranny in either truck is nothing to write home about and, surprise, worse gas mileage from the smaller motor. The Dodge also will not roll when you put it in gear and stumbles at times- maybe there is something to the engine idle issue I read about here- we'll see. My Chevy pulled my 4000 boat w/ no problem but I have not hooked it up to the Dodge yet- should be no problem. I would have to say that the Chevy handles better than the Dodge at least in the body roll department. However, the ride of the Dodge is much more smooth and car-like. Moving inside the cabin the Dodge is very quiet and seems more refined than the Chevy did which I am pleased with. The Dodge has less useful storage areas (no room for my amp and subwoofer)than the Chevy did but both offer plenty of passenger room. The Chevy has a great back seat compared to other ext. cab pickups but can't really compare to the 4 door Dodge back seat. The seats in my Chevy were much more comfortable than the Dodge seats- this bugs me. I may look to do the Durango seat swap if my butt and back can't adapt to the new seats. Overall I really like both trucks. I feel that the Chevy had more things for the $$$ than the Dodge (bigger motor w/ better gas mileage, more comfortable/adjustable seats, 4 wheel discs, 100K mile spark plugs & engine coolant, larger bed, more places to put "stuff", tow/haul feature was nice). However, the car-like refinement of the Dodge (so far) makes it feel like a higher quality vehicle. Time will tell.........Sorry so long- I felt like typing.

Message: I love my Dakota. I only got the 3.9 v6 but it goes fast enough for me (I had a 2.2 toyota and a 3.0 ranger previously). My Dodge takes corners extremely well for a mid-size truck -- I got the tire and handling package with mine, however. The gas mileage isn't that good though -- my neighbor has a 4.7 and we both get about the same mileage. Inside comfort is great -- we took it 3 hours up to lake Erie and were comfortable the whole way (barely any road noise).
I'll be honest, if I had the money 5 months ago to get a Silverado, I would have (I even test drove one). But now, even if I did have the money for a Silverado, I think I'd stick with my Dakota.

Message: This choice is starting to get difficult. My dad has a 99 Silverado 4x4 and it is just so smooth as far as the motor goes. he has the 4.8 motor and it seems very quiet. I dont know if I like that or not, but a nice open exhaust will fix that. He has had a few problems with his but nothing major, pretty much similar stuff thats wrong with the Dakotas. The one selling point of the Dakota is the looks, you just cant beat em'.

Message: I actually get a GM discount which started me out looking at the Silverado. Two things really got me looking at the Dakota Quad Cab (well actually more than two), first and foremost is the looks! Second is the fact that I could get a 5spd V8 without having to drive around a big "boat". I love big trucks, but I really don't need at fullsize truck to go to work everyday. The dak isn't huge but it can tow my boat, jet skis and dirtbikes just as well as a Chevy and still drive it like a sports car! All in all, I think the (Quad Cab) Dakota is the best of both worlds!!

Message: I will take my Dodge over the Chevy anyday. The best full size truck is the Toyota Tundra. Smoooth trany and great V8 engine. Best of all it will not break. The Chevy will be in the shop constantly. If you don't believe me look at Consumer Reports. Oh yeah, it is made in America. I chose the Dakota because I didn't need a full size and I liked the style and the features.

Message: I have a silverado 5.3 ext cab z71 2002, my dad has a ram 5.2 off road 2001. I must say they are both great trucks. I'm not just saying this because I have a Silverado, but because the general fact is that pound for pound the Silverado has much more horespower and is much better on gas miles...I drove my dads truck many times and the ram 1500 off road is a great truck. It just depends what you like. If you like getting thrown around going over bumps like me than you probablly like the dodge, if you like a smooth ride the Z71 is for You (like a cadilac) As far as looks go, Dodge is awesome looking but the new chevy design is cool too. I dont like the new 2002 design on the dodges, they realy killed that good 2001 look with the 2002 when they redesigned the front. The factory exhaust on the dodge definitly sounds better.

Message: Dodge all the way.
The reasons.
First off the drive train. Dodges rear axle is way stronger then chevys. The dodge limited slip uses a spring clutch type that is awsome and very reliable. Its almost like having a locked diff. The chevys is a small engaging gear system that will brake no matter what. Its a fact that %80 of chevy trucks that have limited slip have it broken and dont have a limited slip because the small gear is broken.
Dodge truck trannys have a better record then chevys trannys. Yes belive it. The facts from the tranny manufactors are that 3.5 out of 1000 units has problems with dodge and 5.6 out of 1000 has problems with chevy.
Dodge dakota has 4.7 and the s-10 has 4.3 with throttle body injection. The silvarado is a diffent type of truck that should be compaired to the ram. And it doesnt hold a stick to the 2002 Ram. The 2003 will have the 5.7 hemi which makes more power then chevys 8.1L and the new dodge desil will make more power then chevy duramax.
Chevy also has interior problems with rattles and creeks. The fan will make a squeek at low setting and it just doesnt feel solid like the dodges. Chevys door and door handles just dont work as well as dodges.

Message: I would have to agree with the general consensus. One of my uncles has the GMC Sierra 1500 and the other has a Silverado. The truck feels (and is to a point) very refined. It has plenty of power, ride is very smooth, and to begin it seems to have a better quality inside. I say 'seems' because although it 'seemed' like the inside of my S10 seemed to be a bit 'nicer' than the interior of my Dodge, and the Dodge interior (as far as the dash goes) is a bit more spartan, it is DEFINITELY more solid. There's potholes galore around here, and I have had subs in the truck for about 4K miles now, and STILL no squeaks or rattles. That's saying something. My Chevy was in the shop several times, and I never got the service that I got the ONE time my Dodge was in the shop (for a rattling transmission dipstick, no less *L*). Granted, if money was no object, I might like to have a Silverado or a decked-out Tundra. But nowhere else can you find an almost fullsize truck, load it up with options, and still come in under $20K. I'm pleased with my Dak :-)

It's kind of hard to compare a mid-size dak to a full-size chevy. It sucks because when you look at it like that, the Dakota is going to be low on power and on room, but compare it to a Ranger or an S-10, and I'd say we got the bang for out buck.

Message: deapee, are you compairing your 3.9 against a 5.3 chevy? of course the chevy is going to come out on top.
if not, lets do some dyno #'s on a 5.3 chevy VS a 4.7 dodge.
both engines are stock:
5.3 gets 175hp at the wheels. info from sport truck mag (current issue)
4.7 gets 199-201hp at the wheels.
the 4.7 gets 25 more hp from a SMALLER engine!
the funniest part is the chevy is ratted at 285hp at the crank. that is a 110hp LOSS through the drive train!!!! what quality parts!
the dodge is ratted at 230hp and looses 29-30hp! thats more like it.

Message: If your going to compare the Chevy to a Dodge you have to compare the S-10 to the Dakota and the Silverado to the 2002 Ram, and Dodge wins both of those catagories easy. I would personally wait on the ram until the Hemi is available but depending on what you want the 4.7 and 5.9 are still better then the Chevy. How's the S-10 compare to the Dakota? Man, if you gotta ask...

oh by the way, the weight that GM claims they can cary dosent mean crap. my friend is a tow truck driver and he showed me two chevy tow trucks parked next to eachother and both of the frames were broke in half.
since that happened the company switched to using ford trucks.

Message: Well I want to start out by saying that a Silverado is a fullsize and the Dakota is a midsize. You realy should not compare them they are not in the same class. I think that you might want to compare recalls for the two vechiles at alldata.com . I think you will like the handeling and off roading articulation better on the Chevy! The added power is great but the new V8 Vortec engines are haveing a problem with ecessive carbon build up on the pistons due to overly rich condition!!! If you can wait a year the new S10 Quad cab will be out. It is going to be about the size of the current Dakota quad cab and it will have a I-5 engine based on the I6 4200 Vortec engine. The I6 4200 Vortec is the best engine that chevy has built to date!!!!
