Subject: Going crazy, please help! IP: Logged
Message: When I start my engine, there is this very noticeable ticking sound that you must really listen for at idle. When you give it gas it gets louder and more rapid. Its not an exhaust leak because I just put on some gaskets. The noise seems to be coming from the top of the motor at the rear(firewall side) and on the driver side or in the middle. What could this be? Some thoughts are a bad injector, something broken or loose under the valve covers, a sensor in the TB. Please help, its driving my crazy!

Message: At 110,000 miles I might consider a bad/collapsed lifter...
I'm supposing the 318 uses a hydralic lifter, and not a solid one? If it's solid, ignore this...
It could also be a loose/worn rocker arm. If your running 5w/30 or 10w/30 oil in it, try the next step up at the next oil change. But go no higher than 15w/30. If it's a collapsed/worn lifter the thicker oil _should_ lessen or stop the ticking.

Message: Could be a lifter collapse. These engines use hydraulic roller lifters.
If it's been screamed, it could be a bend push rod.
If the oil hasn't been changed regularly, it could be a worn cam lobe.
Pull the valve covers off and wiggle some parts around. They all should be snug.
A small exhaust leak sounds the same, better check.

Message: Thanks guys. I switched to 10W40 a couple oil changes ago and it doesnt consume as much(maybe 1 quart every 3,000 miles). So if I take off the covers everything should be snug in there? Is that the only way to tell?
