Message: Rascal, if you engineir friend is right then why have they only been useing synthetic oil for a few years in these expensive cars. Synthetic oils have been available for a long long time. Seems to me that synthetic has been supior to conventional oil at least 25 years maybe 40 years. Emissions and C.A.F.E. standards are the primary reason for these oils being adopted. Their is also a marketing function involved!!!!

Message: Exxon/Mobil owns so much stock in BMW and BMW executives own so much stock in Exxon/Mobil it's no wonder which oil they are going to use.
I tried to buy stock in AMSOIL (back in 1996) and I found out that they are not a publicly traded company and they said they never would be.
The reason being is this ... Once you go public nothing is a secret any more and everyone who buys stock in you company could one day eventually own your company. Then quality goes down along with sales and then you need a merger to keep the company from filing for bankruptcy ....... Get the picture ?
Note:
This thread started out as a Marvel Mystery Oil thread and I say leave that stuff for the old timers driving the Model-T's.

Message: Rascal, I think my question was pretty straight forward!!! You must not know how big corporations work! You set a set of specifications and then you solicite(sp) bids and let the whole industry know that you are looking for a product. Then everyone comes back with a bid some the bids are open sometimes they are sealed...... THen the company pics the product that meets spec. and cost the least. If it is a large company once they get a contract with the low bider they will go to some of the companys that lost the bideing to agree to make their product available at the same cost as the competitior. They do this so they will still have materials for production if the primary supplier has a problem with quality or quanity. While I like Amsoil products and use them they realy are not set up to win a contract. Amsoil uses independant dealers and they will not under cut their dealers. Amsoil also has limited production facility and if something happened to one of their facilitys I doubt they could quickly shift production to another site. I am sure that the main factory that lost them the contract with GM would have been their cost. It is too bad because it would be nice to have American made oil in the cars!!!

Message: Oh yeah Sandman, that is an accurate picture of capitalism if I ever heard. Your lack of knowledge on the matter only began when you began trying to explain how corporations work. Since I am incorporated, I think I have a vague idea and your version is complete fiction. Amsoil is a multi-level company, just like Amway. Independent dealers? Sure, but an average product. I am not knocking the product, just found it curious that with all its claims of superiority, no new car manufacturers offer it their cars. If is was so great, BMW could be an independent dealer and use it in their cars, but NONE choose to do so. Instead, I got a bunch of vapid explanations of corporations, (all inaccurate), and some lame excuses about low bid. If it were the low-bid theory, why don't the auto manufacturers use dino oil, its cheaper? Please explain that one to me? Hmmm...must be the low-bid, low-quality theory...what a joke. Could it possibly be they PREFER that product? I suggest that is the reason, not the lame-brained explanations of low-bidding and low quality..sounds like the multi-level explanations that are hammered into the Amway people when they try to explain their exhorbent costs for same quality products. Get a clue for God's sake. Since you only offer theory and no proof, I still say they use it because it is a superior product. Like it or not, that is the most logical and likely reason. Next time, stick it out in your economics class.

Message: Once I had to make a trail fix while in the middel of nowhere out 4x4ing. I had to replace my powerstereing low pressure line. So I replaced it and then you would think that someone in the group would have had some tranny fluid or powerstereing fluid. Nope, We all had manual transmissions so we had welding gear, gearlubs, spare u-joints, valve stems, oil, gear lube, steel putty......... So all I could find to put into the system was a quart of MMO. I filled the system up with MMO 6 years ago and have never bothered to replace it. It still works great and is not oxidized. I have considered draining it and putting Amsoil ATF in it. I had forgotten all about it until this thread. The funny thing is that it has been working great for years like this.

Message: Hey I am not advocateing the use of MMO. I do not think anything should be aded to any oil unless you are trying to flush some build up out. I would never advocate that anyone put this stuf in their car or truck and drive it. I have used it to free up stuck rings or pluged up lifters and a sticking valve bodie. After each use I always drained the system and refilled with fresh fluid. This time I forgot and just thought I would throw it in the thread. ANother one of my friends use's MMO regularly. He always ran 4 quarts of 60W and 1 quart of MMO for summer time and 4 quarts of 30W and 1 Quart of MMO for winter use. I could never bring him over to synthetics. I am going to drain it out tomorrow and refil with Amsoil ATF. I thought that the MMO would work better then gear lube or motor oil with what was left in the system.

Marvel Mystery oil is a surfactent with who knows what else in it. I have taken and soaked the cylinders down through the intake and spark plug holes and let set, crank and set for periods of 30+ hours and found it seems to effectively remove carbon and give a a power gain. In the old days the label said something to the effect if it was burnt in the ring area the result would be a harmless residue or something to that effect that would still lubricate. I beleive it was a disclaimer of sorts, but it has been ommited from the labels found now. That alone might tell the flash point is low, just guessing.
It states on the front label" Marvel Mystery oil since 1923 Ultimate in Engine Protection"
79 years later, and it's still a mystery!
I bet it was used successfully to help cold oil from congealing in the early days, except I don't know what causes oil to congeal, I've never heard of a anti-congealing additive in a oil, guessing others haven't either.
Also,I cannot remember where, but sometime I read that MMO contains witch hazel oil. I guess that's what gives it that "nice smell".

Message: y'know, I'm reading this string, gettin' some chuckles, some new uses for MMO, some no-no's for MMO, & even a little of the "Mystery" of the ingredients cleared up. Funny, I can't find ANYTHING about what its actual intended use is!
"Top cylinder lubrication"? What the hell does THAT mean? Maybe something back in 1923 perhaps.
I have SEEN inside Mobil 1 engines (easy Amsoil, ALL synthetics are good) and believe it- the tops of the cylinders were FINE! Now, what I HAVE noticed about MMO is how "clingy" it is, for a relativly lo-vis oil. It makes a cheap & excellent gun protectant, but swab it out of the bore before shooting! It makes a good fogging oil for winter stored vehicles too. I like to explore uses for additives too, but I never use something like this without understanding what it actually does, and why WHAT it's being added to doesn't already have 'it'. But, hey- if it indeed cleans carbs/injectors, use it sparingly! I imagine (based on the apparent ingredients) it's a good crankcase flush solvent, being it won't allow anything to scuff. Again, with synth's & proper change frequency, I've SEEN -0- "sludge" build-up in V8's. "Sludge" is more from successive 10 or 15 minute trips & 1 oil change per year, whether it needs it or not!
Even MMO & Holy Water won't stop THAT!
I REALLY got a kick from the guy that sucked a quart of it through his vacuum hose, thus smoking out the entire neighborhood, generating an Emergency response. Did your parents have any kids that lived? Yikes! Relax! Seek professional help!

Message: In another forum I frequent, I found a nice thread about using STF as a great engine cleaner. Here are a few quotes:
old modders secret...buy one of those 4 quart ATF bottles from advanced auto for like $5... when you go to change ure oil next time... drain the oil...then fill it back up with the atf and run the engine for like 15min... drain oil and see how black it comes out... i just did this to my 118,000 mi gtp and it worked great... ATF has alot of cleaning detergents in it that clean the engine out really good... went it bright red, came out BLACK... then fill with mobile1 : ) ... alot of you prolly already know this, just sharing some knowledge...peace
and this one -
Marvel Mystrey oil is great stuff! It can unsieze stuff that you think would never come loose! Heck i used it on a snowblower that i seized up. Took the head off and dumped the stuff on the piston and coated the walls and let it sit 2 days. Then turned the motor over by hand a few times and wammo good as new
And finally this -
I do this every 6 months or so....The first time I did it used "Gunk" brand 5 min engine flush and it looked and smelled like ATF. After some investigating I found out thats all it is with a little paint thinner in it. I dont use the full 5 qts. of ATF though, just drain one out, and put one in. Let it get up to temp and DONT drive with it in. Works awesome o get crap out. Stuff comes out pitch black after going in red.

Johnny2,
The problem with all of this type of "shade tree" mechanic work, is that the people who practice these things think that if the motor just starts and runs afterwards, then the nonsensical thing that they just did was "safe".
For instance, if their camshaft goes flat a few months down the road -- because they ran it with insufficent lubricity or film strength -- they will never connect it to their "shade tree" antics. Not to mention all the harm done by multiple people taking an anectdotal story (which may not even be true), from what may be a special case scenario, and extrapolating that it will work for all cars and circumstances.
Maybe these gimicks worked in your grandfathers engine, but engines are too sophisticated to gamble with today.
