Subject: Upgrading Stuff in Dakota... IP: Logged
Message: Well...I got my 01 Dakota SLT 4x4 about 4 months ago. I love it and naturally, I want to take care of it. That's why I have a few upgrade questions.
First, let's take a K&N Filter. These are supposed to add "up to 12" horsepower to a truck. Is that a truck with 50,000 miles on it and still equipped with the dirty, dust-filled stock air filter or would I see gains on mine of numbers like 10 or so? I don't want a race car or anything (or I would have bought a sports car) my main thought here (and tell me if I'm wrong) is that if there's more horsepower, the engine will work less if driven at the same speeds (sounds logical to me).
Secondly, what about ignition wires or spark plugs? would my truck (now with 2500 miles) benefit from new wires or plugs (even though it doesn't 'need' them)? I'm not into this one for horsepower, just want to make sure everything's firing right (It's common-knowledge that the factory doesn't put the most-expensive stuff into their vehicles -- they're wear-items and should be replaced periodically). Or should I leave the plugs and wires the way they are?
Lastly, if anyone knows of any other upgrades that should be performed to new vehicles, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Message: In my opinion any vehicle off the showroom floor, doesn't matter if it has 1 mile or a million it deserves a K&N. The plug wires and plugs, could wait. If it aint broke, dont fix it.
However my recomendation is to get a whole air intake if you can afford it. Uncork all that horsepower. A catback exhaust wouls also do wonders for gas mileage and power. Just a drop in K&N will give about 5hp. An intake however could give up to 15hp, in the right conditions etc.
