I wonder why you truck is so heavy also,my truck with all the heavy duty stuff weights 2,090 lbs and it was weighted at a grain elevator scale, you drive on.

Message: No, that's not a miss print. That's with a 5 speed. My truck with the stock computer shuts down at 115. With my custom programmed computer, the only limitation is wind resistance, road conditions, law enforcement and the size of your huevos! hehehe The truck has seen 150+ for a short burst on a deserted road. My guess is that the truck would actually top out somewhere in the 160-165 range if I were ever able to find a "safe" place to run it up there. Not that anything about going that fast in this truck can be considered "safe" by any stretch of the imagination.
The addition of R/T wheels/tires and bigger sway bars added weight to the truck. In addition, the turbo system components all added weight also.
I'm hoping to better that 13.05 @ 106 mph time this coming friday night. That time was done in the heat of the day (90+ degrees), and I know it'll go quicker with cool dense air. I was hoping to skip the 13s all together! It's kinda fun having 450-500 hp at your disposal!

I think I win the fat truck award. Mine weighs 4980 pounds. It's a 2000 4x4 Club Cab Sport Plus with the 4.7, automatic, and full-time transfer case. It has every factory option with the exception of a block heater and the 1800-pound payload (which I could clearly use.)
That weight also includes a fiberglass shell (about 200 pounds), a Bedrug, small toolbox, and on-board air compressor (about 85 pounds total), a fair amount of recovery and survival gear (about 40 pounds), a tank of gas (about 130 pounds), and me (about 200 pounds).
So the curb weight on the truck alone with a tank of gas would be about 4455 pounds.
I'd say 2090 pounds for any Dakota seems awfully suspect. That's less than most compact cars.

Message: Gravel weighs something like 100 pounds per cubic foot. The bed of your truck has about 30 cubic feet of space. If full of gravel the load would be over 3,000 pounds.
A safe load of gravel in a Dakota would be on the order of six or seven inches deep in the box.
Lots of folks seem to think their truck can haul anything that will fit in the bed. Sometimes you seem them smashed up on the side of the freeway. Sometimes they're dead.

Message: Look up "public scale" or "truck scale" in the yellow pages. They are usually located in industrial areas of town or other places where there is a lot of truck traffic, like the produce terminal. I found a truck scale at a truck driving school. They charged me ten bucks total to weigh the front axle, the rear axle, and the whole truck. Well worth knowing. Subtract the weight of the truck from the GVWR on the door sticker and you'll know the available payload. I bet you'll learn it is less than you thought.

Message: Bryce Chapman said he could not fill bed with gravel that would be about 4000lbs on a short bed, massively overloaded.the dangers of overloading are simple, the truck would be hard to control and the tires, rims, frame, brakes, lug nuts, cargo box, axles, springs and just about anything else could fail!!!not to mention a cop could give you a ticket for being stupid. If you want to fill the box with gravel try a 1-ton with the payload package,I think they are rated at 5500lbs.

Message: Dangers of overloading:
#1: You have to stop the weight. In the case of gravel, it's gonna slosh. In the case of solid objects, they can impact the back of the cab with some severe force.
#2 stuff can break. The pumpkin can pull apart and you're left with two halves of an axle, the shackles can break, the bolts holding them on can break.
#3 your tires. If your tires have a noticable buldge, you are right at the limit of where you should be, if they have an extremely noticable buldge, you should've stopped a while ago
Typically engineers (of any device) will build something 3x tougher than it needs to be under normal use because they don't know what the owner is gonna really do with it. Don't bet on them doing that every time.
When you see a Uhaul trailer flip a truck on it's side while driving down a 4 lane freeway, you'll have some respect for loads.

from the posts it doesn't seem like
a good idea to haul gravel in the
bed unless it's a small amount.
could check with the gravel yard
first how much a cubic yard weighs
and go from there.
I did 3 (dangerously heavy) loads
over a distance of 4 to 5 miles.
I kept the speed low (under 40) and
made speed adjustments slowly to
minimize the effect of the weight
on changes in speed and bumps.
It was clearly a difficult task
for the vehicle. Something to keep
in mind for those weekend projects.
For the few trips I made, I can't
tell any difference now - except
better insight for the future.

Message: If you have to haul anything so heavy you have to wonder about it, use a trailer instead. You can tow a house on wheels if you do it slowly. But overloading your truck bed, even once, can be VERY expensive.

Message: I have been doing some MAJOR landscaping in my backyard this year. One day I needed some dirt for finishing touches (the bulk of the project required 100+ tadem-axle dump-truck loads of dirt)... so off I went with my Dak to the local landscape store. The guy with the Bobcat said one scoop was 1500 lbs. That was perfect. Of course, when he put it in my truck, the truck did squat... but not much. SO.... I told him to put in another scoop. (I was also on uneven ground so when I looked at one of the bump-stops, it had a LONG way to go. Problem was, the other side was almost maxed... because of the uneven ground). WOW, now I had 3k lbs in the back. I only had ½ mile to my house... and I am glad I did. This was WAY TOO MUCH weight. I would say if you want to overload, 2k lbs would be about max.
Something to remember.... Rock, dirt or feathers... pounds are pounds. Doesnt matter what you are hauling. Just be aware of loads shifting.
