Message: Dodge really picked a winner when the designed the front ends of the 2000+ Dakotas. No leveling kits, no suspension kits, whats the deal? All i want to do is level out the front end of the truck!! Went to a local 4x4 shop and nothing that he new of caould be done. Freakin rack and pinion steering!! You would think 2yrs later something would be out already.
Just a little frustrated thats all.

Message: I guess most aftermarket suppliers dont think that people would want to lower a 4x4......

Message: I think his front is lower than his back. He wants a leveling kit like ford offers for its super duty. and that is just a leaf they add in the front. I don't know why they are having troubles with a lift. Chevy has a ton for them. It must be the rack steering.

Message: You could crank up the torsion bars slightly to level. Too much could cause problems, but a little bit shouldn't affect anything.

Message: The torson bars ARE adjustable on the front.
The IFS front end on the 2000+ dakotas is FAR better than the last one. RACK&PINION STEERING RULES! Why do you think it handles so well?
If you truck is not level side-to-side see your dealer for warantee work. If it not lever reont-to-rear... this is the design...put some weight in it.

Message: I really dont think Dodge did this intentionally..I don't think Dodge was out to screw us with that design. As far as cranking them goes, that was done a while back and were cranked about an 1.00-1.25. Keep cranking them and that just adds to the stress of the torsion bar and just makes them drop faster. Guess the only thing to do is replace the shocks and see if a heavier duty torsion bar is out there. I emailed Sway-A-Way once and they said they might be putting one out. I'll have to contact them again.

Message: If you crank the torsion bars to level the vehicle out, there is NOT more stress on them. If there is not more weight on the front end than normal... the bars will not have any more stress on them. Cranking the bars does not cause any more twist in them. Only if you crank the front end up high witl you cause problems. And even then the problems are not from the mere 'jacking up'... they are cause by expecting full travel. That is what causes more twist/stress.
Think about it: same weight in vehicle, no matter where you crank the torsion bars... they bars are not twisted any more. If you are simply keeping the vehicle level... there will be no more twist in them throughout the suspension travel than the manufacturer intended.
Now, if your front end is lower because you have a 500 lb. winch in the front... THEN you crank on the bars. That will twist them more. Even still, I have not heard of any failures.
Torsion bars are not a new technology. They have been around for over 40+ years. You would be surprised what kind of abuse they can take.

Message: Robert, Cranking them does put more stress in the bar. By reindexing the bars you add more pre-load to them. It has the same affect that adding more weight to the front would have on them as far as stress. It can also shorten CV joint life if you crank them too much. This is why the after market makes Torsion bars that are 33% larger and stiffer for IFS Toyota's. They also make a splined adapter universal joint adapter to take the place of the out board CV joint. This allows up to 16" of wheel travel at the front wheels. The 1995 1/2 on up Toyot Tacomas all have rack and pinion steering and they have lift kits for them. There must be something in the new design that does not offer enough support for a lifted vechile or the front drive line geometry must be difficult to modify.
