Subject: Rent a Stick Shift??? IP: Logged
Message: Sorry if this is a little off-topic, but this is the best place I know where to ask.
I want to teach my 21 yr old Granddaughter how to drive a stick shift, because she is getting a nice used basic Dodge Dakota 2WD 5-speed stick for Christmas. She is in College, 2,000 miles away, where her "new" Dakota is hidden, but she will be here in San Diego for Christmas. I want to give her a day or two lessons on ANY stick shift after she learns what's waiting for her when she gets back to College.
PROBLEM: No car company that I can find here in SD rents a stick shift anything!
QUESTION: Anyone have an idea how to solve this problem? Thanks!!!

Message: well she's going to wonder why you want to teach her to drive a stick shift, but ask a friend if you can teach her in their car.

Message: She prolly wont hurt it too bad, it doesn't take long to get used to a stick, just be REAL easy on it at first. Maybe get through all the other stuff before she starts actually driving like what a clutch IS, and how to release it slowly with gas. That's pretty much it... There has got to be some places online that you can basicly just rip off and use.

She gets notice of her Dakota (with photos, model, manual, AAA card, etc) on Christmas Eve. Then I want to teach her some stick shift basics on Christmas day. (I don't have any friends with stick shifts...all automatics) Then she flys back east to school and picks up the Dakota where it is already hidden away on a farm in a relatives barn.

Yep, I taught all 4 kids on a stick (VW Beetle) including her Mother. Just want to teach it one more time. ...gggg...

Message: Someone suggested rent a little U-Haul truck. Not a bad idea, but I checked and the little ones are all automatics. Only SOME of the big full sized vans are still stick.

Message: Demo a new/used car W/STICK from a dealer. Ask to take it home for the night "so you can stuff the family in the back seat and check out the leg room on the way to dinner." If the saleman insists on going with you, they don't deserve your business anyway.

A U-Haul is a pretty funny idea.

Thought about that good idea, but they are goosey here about that, so close to the border. But I do only need to get it away from him for an hour or so, on Christmas Day.

Message: A dirtbike!!! If your grand daughter is willing. A little dirtbike is a good way to understand the clutch concept. It worked for me at least, but then again I am a guy who enjoys stuff like that.

Actually, you can rent a Viper for ~$300/DAY. Used to be a Rent-a-Vette in town, but now they are only in Las Vegas I believe. Maybe a specialty shop like Rent-A-Metro is the solution.

Message: Just lucked out! Found a small nearby agency that rents a Mitsubishi Eclipse (whatever THAT is) 4-speed for $35/day, 21 yr age minimum. Sounds like something that may make that Dakota feel like a spacious land yacht.
